Photography Question

Mark J. Mohapp

How to learn the features of a new camera ?

I just purchased a new digital camera (Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D) and this is a significant upgrade for me. I am using The Magic Lantern Guides as opposed to the instruction manual to learn the features.

Can an online photo course assist me with this? What is the down side of taking a course on line as opposed to a local college or techincal school?

Thanks for any advice or comments.

  Hi Mark,
Thanks for your interest in BetterPhoto courses! Also, congrats on
your new purchase!

Depending on your photography skill level in general, there are at least several online courses that focus on digital photography:

- Using Your Digital SLR ... This is a brand-new course for fall that's taught by the editor of Shutterbug magazine: George Schaub. It's rated at a skill level of 4 (Serious Hobbyist to Intermediate), meaning that you would need to have a working knowledge of f/stops and shutter speeds. But, assuming you are beyond the beginning stage, it's ideal for anyone making the jump to a D-SLR.

- The Joy of Digital Photography ... taught by Jeff Wignall, the author of a terrific book by the same name. It's rated at a skill level of 2 (Beginning to Serious Hobbyist), and designed for owners of any digital camera.

- Digital Workout #1: Beginning Digital Photography ... taught by
the awesome instructor team of Susan and Neil Silverman ... rated at skill level 2.

- Bare Bones Digital Photography taught by magazine editor and author Robin Nichols. This is an excellent beginning course (level 1).

A big advantage of online education: The courses are totally flexible, since they are online. After 8 weeks in any of these courses, you will be feeling very comfortable with your new camera!

Thanks again for your interest, Mark!
