Red, blue, Green, and yellow aare the best filters for black & white photography. For better contrast and more dramatic photos. Mr.T

Thanks, Mr T, for the quick response. How do I pick one over the others in any scenario? Do I look at what colours I'm trying to photograph in B&W and pick the same colour filter for that shot eg my baby's wearing blue so pick blue?

A colored filter will filter out its opposite color. For example, a red filter filter out blue. So when you take a picture with a blue sky the sky will become very dark. Conversely it will intensify things that are the same color. So a red baloon will look white. To translate this to portraits, if you shoot with a red filter pink toned skins will take on a milky white appearance. Be careful, because so will red lips. A green filter will make pink toned skin look bronze. It works very well for portraits of men. Blue filters will do this also but may be too strong. As I say to most people, experiment and find out what you like in different situations.

Jeff gave you some great advice so try and follow it. Try them out to see which one you like. Like he says it all depends what is the main subject (an outdoor scene the red filter will be dramatic Good Shooting Mr.T
