Know about the Beseler Cadet II Enlarger?

Hi! I'm in search of a better enlarger to use. I've got an Opemus 6x6 but it's too much to deal with being older and not as much of a precision tool as I am after. While the Beseler Cadet II enlarger might not be total precision, it's better than this thing, trust me. Anyway, I was checking out the Beseler on B&H and it says:

"The Cadet II comes equipped ready for use, complete with a pre-mounted 50mm Beslar lens, 35mm negative / slide carrier, filter drawer for 3 x 3" color printing or variable contrast filters, optical glass condenser, and a 14-1/4 x 11-3/4" white laminated baseboard for enlargements up to 8 x 10" "

Does that mean that it won't be able to make enlargments over 8x10? Will it just not raise up high enough even with the 50mm lens? It also says the column is reversible so you can make larger prints by projecting onto the floor but this sounds like it would make it more difficult that it should be to make even an 11x14 or something.

What's your experience and what do you think? This is something I'm asking for for a Christmas gift from my parents so I don't want to ask for something too expensive. Thanks!

Heck, does anybody have any opinions or experience with Beseler? Are their lower level enlargers decent for student work and maybe some low end jobs?

I can’t tell you much about Beseler Cadet but I would VERY recommend you to get any LPL enlarger – the best price/performance ratio, especially if you get second hand one. I own LPL 7452 (European model) – absolutely best enlarger I have ever used (and I did use a few, believe me…)

Andrew, I use Beselers in my darkroom class and they do well. Not superb but well. It has the standard 50mm on it and I'm shooting with consumer lenses and the sharpeness is good depending on your film. Had some I think Ilford FP4 (ISO 125) and got some decent 11x14s. If you're right on top, then obviously you'll see the grain but from a distance, the lens, film, enlarger did well. The laminated baseboard (I THINK) is the board that sits on the floor where you paper lays on top of. Pretty much the "table top" for lack of better words". Never heard of the LPL but I"m new to this as you are, its probably good but if the deal is right on the Beseler, I recommend it. Great little thing especially for a first home enlarger. good luck.
