I've been using the D50 for a few weeks, and I love it! It's my first SLR, but I've been getting some great shots with it. See my gallery!

Had this camera for a couple weeks now. It replaced a Panasonic FZ20 which left me frustrated most of the time. I wanted a DSLR when I bought the FZ20 but there was nothing in my price range at that time. The Nikon D50 is in a completely different league than ANY point and shoot, even superzooms that cost more than the D50. Powers up immediately, focuses instantly and captures shots I could never get with any point and shoot that I've had. The built in flash is excellent, it never washes out my subjects and has very good reach. Battery life is fantastic with the EN-EL3a Battery. I bought my D50 BODY ONLY then picked up a AF-S DX Nikkor 18-70 mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED on eBay. I'm ready for most everything as far as my needs go. I will pick up a lens with more reach to alternate with before summer to capture the kids. I recommend this camera highly. If you need more room to grow I'd go with the Nikon D70. Either way you will not regret it!

I have had the d50 for a couple of months now..my first dslr. I LOVE IT! Wish I would have went digital a long time ago.I researched the dslr's before I purchased and though many many are out of my price range, the d50 and d70 were not. The d50 gets great reviews, and even better reviews than the d70. They are saying the d50 out performs it's "older brother". I have not had a single regret. The d50 will do just about everything the d70 will do, save a few things. I can't think of them off the top of my head, but I think one is that it will take a more rapid sequence, I think by 2 frames, and it will allow the built in flash to be a master when using wireless flash...which I do wish I had. Just do a search on reviews on either camera and you can compare them side by side. You won't go wrong with the d50 though.

Michael and Joseph--can you tell me what comes stock in the d50 package (memory card, charger, lens, other goodies etc) I work on a ship and in about 2 months we'll be in Hong Kong.

I'm keen to buy one but I need to know it the 'deal' is comparable to buying one in America. (Used to be asian prices were way better than american. That isn't the case any more--I think they're about the same, but I'll BE in Hong Kong and Singapore by the time I have the cash)

There is the problem as well with a local warranty as opposed to an international one but there are reputable dealers in case anyone wants to know.

Kitty: I purchased the D50 body only then chose my own lens. There are different packaged kits that include 1 lens or 2. Even though it wasn't the absolute lowest price on the net, I bought mine at https://www.onecall.com
They are a Nikon dealer and have great reviews. I paid $589.72 with 3 day Fed-Ex shipping. The body only (no lens) came with the camera, battery with terminal cover, quick charger, strap eyepiece cap, usb cable and video cable. Hope this info helps!

Thanks all for your response's to my question.I've been using a D70 since April 2004(which I've loved every moment of )and I was thinking about the D50 as a back up body .What features do you think I'd miss.I know I'd miss The lighted LCD on top of the D70. I use that alot when doing night exposures on a tripod.I don't think the Remote Commander feature would be missed .I use the nikon sync cord for that.
