Photography Question

Katrina

I know that this is a photography and not a news website. But, I can't help but wonder if there are any members out there who are from the Hurricane Katrina ravaged areas who have photographs to give us a more personal idea of the devastation. My prayers go out to all of those affected.

Don't know of anyone left there with a camera. The two BP members I know of are long gone from the Big Easy, thank the Lord. If anyone is interested in pictures of some of the victims and what they are enduring now, I may be able to post a few next week. My son and I are going to work tomorrow at a local shelter (our civic center) that is housing some of the refugees from Katrina.

I will be going down to MS this weekend as part of an emergency management group out of Indiana. I am buying a Canon digital rebel xt to take with me and will do what I can to take pictures while down there. I will post them on my website when I return and will post a note on BP to let you all know when they're ready to view. please be patient- I likely will not have internet acess while down there so posting may be delayed.

Amy, we would love to see the photos but, more than that, we thank you and your team for your service. You and your group are the kinds of heros that make this such a wonderful country. God bless you.

Hero? No, but it is nice to be able to help. Just a side note- if you want to help, please donate $$ to a service organization rather than sending goods. Thanks!

How wonderful to be able to go down there to help. I would love to go, but of course, my husband is deployed and there's no one to take care of my girls. :P I feel so small, like I can't do anything that would make a significant difference. I wish I could help everyone down there. :( It truly breaks my heart to watch all the suffering and be helpless to stop it.

Autumn, I also think it would be nice to go help , but truely your plate is full, it must be very hard with your husband being deployed, I believe you are donig your part already by being a military wife and taking care of your children while he's away. even with the devistation in the south we havent forgotten our troops :) take care

Thanks, but it is SO not about me. I mean, what I am going through seems almost trivial to losing EVERYTHING. (plus, my time is almost up. lol) I have asked my church if we are doing anything to help, but I think they are still trying to figure out what to do. Is anyone part of something big that could give me an idea of how to help? I don't want to just give money and call it good. I want something that is going to make a substantial difference.

First let me say THANK YOU to those of you who are coming to help us and those of you who have helped us. I live in the Biloxi/D'iberville area of Mississippi. We were hit pretty hard down here. I got to ride down Hwy 90 along the beach for the first time yesterday...everything is gone. I don't know how many of you are familiar with the area but 90 on the beach in Biloxi used to be known as 'casino row'. It's heartbreaking to see the casinos that used to sit in the gulf sitting across Hwy 90. This was a very powerful storm to be able to move these huge barges that the casinos are built on across the street. I have a ton of pictures from down here. I will try my best to pick through them and get some up. I have a free account and can only get 30 pictures up at a time...if anyone has a site that would like to host more please let me know!!! Thank you all again!

i got this e-mail... im not sure if its New Orleans, Miss. or even if its Katrina pics..the email said it was Katrina pics from a trip from the mall to the base... what ever that means. anyways, its in a Power Point Presentation so youll need Power Point to view it, or at least the free Power Point viewer from the Windows down load site.

  Kasey-
I just returned from 2 weeks in Biloxi with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Some of the responders who went with our team worked in D'Iberville clearing roads and patrolling. I took a few trips out of our base camp and saw the destruction on Hwy 90. It's hard to believe it even now. I live in a tornado area and I can only compare the destruction in Biloxi to an F5 tornado. Everything is gone! I'm sure it was a beautiful area at one point. I will be posting images from my trip on my website within the next several days-www.rainorshinephotos.com, but I am also getting ready for my sister's wedding this weekend so please allow some flexibility on uploads.

Hope you and your family are ok. I'm amazed you managed to find an internet connection!

Craig-Those are indeed pictures of Biloxi, Ms from Katrina. They start out in Edgewater Village across from Edgewater mall and head down Hwy 90 going east.

Amy-Thank you and everyone else that came with you for helping us. The view down Hwy 90 is def. hard to believe. I wish I could have gotten better pictures than what I have. I am uploading some to my page on BP and I'm hoping to soon be able to get a website going to put all of them up. I am planning on going back to Hwy 90 and walking as far as I can and take pictures, or atleast get in the back of someones truck so I will have a full view of everything and not just what I can get out of a window. I'm looking forward to seeing what pictures you have taken. No need to be in a hurry, they are just pictures and they aren't going anywhere. Have fun at your sister's wedding, I'm sure after being down here it will be nice to get around people enjoying themselves. Thank you again!!!

I have gotten a website up with all of my pictures from the Hurricane. I have a special section of some of the better ones titled 'Hurricane Katrina'. I will be uploading all of them to this website and eventually get around to putting some of my 'normal' pictures up also. Feel free to take a look at what I have up and check back often for I am working on getting them all up. www.kce.smugmug.com

  Hi All,

Sorry for the delay, but I have some pictures online now (www.rainorshinephotos.com) of the Katrina damage in Biloxi, MS. I will be posting a bunch more later this week. I ended up doing 2 two-week shifts in the Gulf which is why I'm just now getting back with everyone. As we left on October 14th, the town was starting to get back on its feet and you could tell that everything would be ok eventually. The locals were really welcoming and hospitable and it was a great experience. Because I didn't get permission to use the photos other than for my website, please respect the privacy of those featured in the photos and do not post any of the images elsewhere. Thanks! Amy
