Seagull Cameras

Does Seagull (medium format cameras) sell any sort of lens or hood to help stop sun glare from appearing on photos? This question applies both to the Seagull 104 and the Seagull 109.

Thanks for any guidance you may provide.

Susan

It's very possible that Seagull makes a few accessories for their twin lens cameras, but they may be difficult to find. And more often than not, a lens hood does not do the job well anyway. I've been a pro shooter for over 30 years, and can honestly say that lens hoods are very seldom effective on normal lenses, and just about totally worthless on wide angle lenses.
I would not (and do not) recommend messing with one. If your camera is mounted on a tripod, you can use your hand, body, or something like a small piece of black mat board to block direct light striking the front of the lens. This is much more effective.
Just hold whatever you have over your lens until it is shaded, and back off as much as possible, being sure that the lens remains shaded, then shoot. If need be, hold your hand or mat or whatever over the viewing lens, and note its position. Then just move it down slightly so that it is covering the bottom lens at about the same angle and distance.
Believe me, it's a lot easier to do than to explain. And it works better than a lens hood.

Hello Mr. Cothran. You may not remember me, but I met you last year at an art festival here in Indiana where I purchased Crazy Daisy. I later contacted you via the phone to purchase This Old House. I love your work. Thank you for your reply as to my question regarding my Seagull camera and the problem with sun glare. I will try your suggestion.

With warm regards,

Susan Vair

I'm doing both shows again this month. I'm not sure which one you were at - Columbus or Madison. The Columbus show has moved to Greensburg (on I-74), and a new show will be in the park. I should be in about the same place at the Madison show. If possible, please stop by and say hi! And bring your Seagull with you. My very first medium format camera was a similar entry level twin lens - the Yashica 124, which I bought new in 1971. It paved the way for 30+ years of shooting with medium format before I finally succombed to digital about 3 years ago.
Look forward to seeing you. Please let me know how your hand, body, or card works. It should do fine - I've been doing it for years.
Michael
