Images Used on a Web Site A high school administrator recently asked if I would mind them using my candid shots of sporting events on the school Web site. How do I handle model releases for this? Is this my responsibility or the school's? (I am not making $$ on this.) Most of the athletes are under 18. Thanks for any help! Kristi Geelan

You would not need a model release, as this is considered editorial use, not commercial use - just like the school yearbook.

I am not certain of the legal answer, but to be on the safe side a parent or guardian should sign for each recognizable image of a child under 18 that is posted on the web. As a former technology coordinator and web site administrator of a high school, this the guideline we followed. Candid photos of a group, where no one student stood out, were sometimes an exception. Many parents object to their child's image being on the web; and with strangers preying on children these days, it is better to be safe than sorry. Nancy

At the schools here, they send a form home with eack kid at the beginning of the year called a media release form , which lets you decide if it's ok for them to use pictures of your kids in their various publications, inclcudding their website. So I think if it's the school's website, it's their responsibility to get the permission. But you might want to mention it to them.
