i asked this on the 23rd and received no response.. so i'm asking again.. following the "how to win" suggestions, I uploaded some pics in tiff format instead of jpeg.. do any of you see a difference? they look the same to me..

The difference between JPEG and TIFF is compression...basically. There are probably more differences, but I don't think there should be a very big difference, if any, when the picture is viewed online. I usually just upload in JPEG because it doesn't take as long. I'll bet that most of the photos that win the competitions are uploaded as JPEGs. Ha, I'll bet it's compressed once it's uploaded anyway to save space. Not like you should be able to tell. Hope this answers your question. Feel free to comment or argue if you don't agree.

I originally thought that those who had crisper images either had better cameras or were submitting them as tiffs. However, I believe differently now. Tripods and digital enhancements (like selectively sharpening or bluring) will get you further than posting tiffs instead of jpegs.

the reasoning behind using tiff was that pictures look the same no matter what monitor they're viewed on.. I suppose to get a true comparison , I should have posted 2 same pics side by side.. Andrew, I love your ducks!! cherylann, the little girl feeding the ducks is adorable the water still distracts from the quality tho'

I can notice a difference in mine when I put the jpeg next to the tiff on my monitor. The jpeg looks "muddier". I can't see any difference here, though.

actually, the first 6 images in my gallery are tiff and the rest are jpeg. I think I see a difference now but really have to put identical images side by side..

You should always upload in TIFF's. Reason being, when you upload a photo here at BP, they make some changes (add borders, possibly resize, etc) then resave the file as a Jpeg. So, if you upload a Jpeg, they make their changes, and then resave as a Jpeg, you will lose some quality. Uploading as a TIFF, then when they resave as a Jpeg, you lose less quality in the final image online.

What you said is so logical, Joe.
And you are right about the BP resizing and adding borders. I'm not sure if that's changed any in the new way of uploading.
...I have been uploading in jpeg all along, but sometimes I have found minor quality problem. I will have to switch to tiff from now on...

it is changed even with the new way. I traded a few emails with Jay on this. Look at any picture you upload for example in your gallery, and you will see a white border around it...changed and resaved, even with the new method..

all this time and I never noticed the border until someone mentioned it., I especially see a difference in photo quality in the "bubble girls" pictures..

Beats me. I shoot at the highest jpeg on my camera. Then "save for web" using 500 for the short side for photos I submit on this site. They always come out looking the same on my monitor both at home and the website.

bob, they all look good on my monitor also.. imo, those boxer babies are a winner, just the way you shot it.. the pussy willow shot is great but i'd do a little cropping..

Thanks, Brigitte,....going with the rule of "odd numbers create tension which at times make for a better photo", I ......I lost my train of thought.......Crop it how?

i'd take out just a little of the dark background to the right.. actually if it was my pic i'd make it an oval and frame it with a hunter green oval mat in a country white frame, but that's just me..
