Photography Question

John Rhodes

Diopter effect

This is a question that I have considered for some time and I may be a bit paranoid by considering this.

I, like most my age, wear glasses to correct for normal age-related farsightedness. When I adjust the diopter (thank goodness for diopters) for best viewfinder focus, is the image (photo) going to be at it's sharpest for a person with perfect uncorrected vision?
Thanks
John

Not in the diopter, but on the computer or on a print it should be perfectly focused(provided that you focused properly).

Brendan, thanks. I should have been more specific. Yes, I do mean, will the printed photo be at its sharpest, provided I focused properly.
Thank you,
John

Is there an alternative to using a diopter? I'm in the same situation and I find I cannot focus telephotos properly.

If I have a new set of glasses made, not bifocals, and just to be used for photography, is there an optimum distance they should be set for to give 20/20 vision?

Finally, is using a rangefinder-type camera to focus any solution? Is there any reason the rangefinder-type superimposed iamge method any less prone to this problem?

Doug, your gallery does not specify your camera model, so it's hard to respond in accurate detail. However, if you use a digicam with which you compose with the LCD screen (non-SLR), then Hoodman (www.hoodmanusa.com)may have a solution. I use their H-DCR for 2" screens with great success. It can be adjusted for your vision. Not a solution for SLR, but check out the site; there may be something.

John, I don't know what camera Doug uses but I can assure you it is not a digicam. Take a look at his website. It is awesome!

Doug, why don't you just use the split-image rangefinder to focus your telephoto? LOL (Sorry about that.)

I would think a rangefinder would be easier to focus, depending on the camera. I know some, especially Leica (want one, can't afford it) have a VERY bright screen and the rangefinder is easier to focus than an SLR. Being near-sighted rather than far-sighted (why are my age related problems so different than everyone else?) I have to use my glasses to focus my Olympus or set my diopter to my vision on my Pentax. The Pentax (645N) is a lot easier to focus because the screen is larger and easier to see.
I would think a pair of glasses tailored to far vision would be the best choice for focusing a camer - just a guess.
