Jagged edges?

Why is it that this picture in my gallery looks like it has jagged edges while in my file folder on my comp the same picture looks perfectly sharp and smooth? This has happened to me once before, I don't understand.

Barbara I have the same problem with some of my photos too, it seems to me the pictures I scanned myself are not quite as sharp as the ones I had put to a cd at the time of developing , then added them to my gallery sorry this isnt as helpful as it would be from the other people here who know more about this stuff.

  Barbara,
That picture looks fine to me. It might just be an issue with your browser.

It is a digital picture, it wasn't scanned. When I look at the one which I included in this question it looks fine, (I decreased the size on this one myself) but if I look at the one in my gallery it has jagged edges! (It was uploaded full size and made smaller throught the new uploading system here at Betterphoto.

Okay Barbara, Dr. Silly's nose might be on a little too tight, because I definitely see jagged edges in the gallery version.

I misunderstood at first and was just looking at the one here in the thread.

I'm wondering, did you upload the the other photos around it in your gallery with the same method? Because I don't see any jaggies like this in "puppy love" or the girl with the hat.

You might want to send an email to jay at betterphoto.com with a link to this thread. I haven't had any problems with the new uploader, but several others have commented with problems that they have had.

Chris

Thanks Chris, I thought I was seeing things. I have uploaded all the other images with the same method, so I don't know, maybe I'll try to upload it again.

Ok, I've switched pictures now so the one with the jagged edges is no longer displayed. Still don't have an answer though! If anyone could explain this to me, it would be very much appreciated!

I have seen jagged edges but I don't see them on this photo or the one in your gallery. I have only experienced the jaggies myself when 'saving to web.' I usually 'save as' and never have a problem with the jaggies, that I know of :o).

Vince Broesch   I think your issue is aliasing. PhotoShop provides great control over vector anti-aliasing, but I've never figured out why PS has less control with anti-aliasing rasters. Anyway, it sounds like Better Photo is resizing your photo? You might want to resize yourself so that Better Photo's software is not resampling. Here is a link, this person explanes aliasing better than I can.

I don't see any jagged edges in any of the photos in your gallery either! I've definitely had them on some of mine, but when I crop them in PS only. If I don't crop them, I don't have that issue. I solved the problem the hard way and did any editing in PS, saved it, then cropped in in another program. That version was fine. I don't know if you have the same situation with cropping, or could it just be some of our monitors are different resolution than others?

Again, I don't see your jagged edges or stair-stepping at all.

Thanks everyone, Laura I didn't know it was called stair-stepping. I have removed the photo and replaced it with one I cropped myself, and it is fine now. Thanks again everyone for your suggestions.

I'm not sure it is called "stair-stepping" that's what I thought it looked like when it happened to me! LOL! Glad you solved your problem...sort of. It doesn't happen EVERY time I crop in PS, but when it has happened, a PS crop was always the culprit, even though it looked fine on my computer prior to upload.
