Photography Question

Lisa Carpenter

Has anyone used MPIX.com?

Has anyone used MPIX.com as a way to produce professional prints? I only have one lab in town that specializes in certain prints, but even they are limited....I would love to hear what other people do when they want really good prints, esp. in B&W...

thanks

I use mpix.com for practically all my printing. Their quality is excellent and they process & ship orders very quickly.

Hi Lisa...I'm with Chris. I use Mpix & LOVE them. They are fast & the quality is great. I do collages as well & they have different sizes where I can get a collage I make printed & it doesn't crop the collage when printed. If you go to their site you can have samples of their paper mailed to you.

Well I'm not absolute positive, but for me I just ordered an 11X14 & just got it in the mail a couple days ago & it's a b&w image of my 2 nieces walking down the railroad tracks & I just had it printed on what they have as the E-surface paper....I framed & matted mine & I like it...I would contact Mpix just to get their suggestion maybe??? I haven't ordered anything bigger than 11x14 yet:):) They're a fabulous company...go check them out....www.mpix.com:):)

I was just looking at their site today and wanted to try it. Alisha, can I ask why you didn't use their True Digital Black and White paper for your b&w? Does it really matter if you use b&w paper for b&w images? And does anyone know if they can border their prints? I've used Costco a couple of times upon recommendations from some local pro photogs, and I've been pleased. But I'm on a quest for the BEST b&w quality, so maybe the paper does make a difference?? :)

I totally concur!!!! MPIX rocks! I have used them for reprints for my clients and their quality and service are unmatched. They charge $4.95 for any order, so be sure it's a big one!

Also...I ordered prints from Snapfish, Photoworks, Costco and MPIX. There is such a large difference that I have a hard time using any other photo processor (even for my "family album" prints).

Do you have to tell them to turn off the automatic color adjustments? I've only had good luck at Costco when I specify that I've used PS and don't want adjustments.

Hi Stacy...The reason being I didn't use True b&w paper is because whatever paper you choose has to be for the whole order. I had color prints ordered as well & I so I chose just the normal paper...If I have a whole order of b&w then yes I will choose the true b&w paper. When you are ordering the pictures...after you have uploaded & then you want to place your order there will be a red box that appears around your image...make sure it's not cropping anything off that will make your image look weird if so you click on where there is something about preview image & then you can move that red box around so it doesn't crop your image & also you will see something about color or b&w & for my colors I click color & same for b&w..once you upload your pics to place the order you'll see what I'm talking about...It took me a minute to figure it all out, but it is totally well worth the effort cause man they do a fabulous job. Cynthia is right the shipping is only $4.95 for the whole order so order lots. Just go to their site & play around with it before you place an actual order. I've also used Snapfish & Ofoto(Kodak gallery) & Mpix is the best!!! Good luck!!!!

You do have to specify that you do not want auto color correction. Also, I forgot to mention before that I ordered all the same pictures from those places listed above to compare color quality, etc. and it was unfair to try to compare them to MPIX. Like I said, their quality is UNMATCHED.

I have used MPIX for over a year now, and I've been very happy with their prints. Lately, uploading has taken a long time, but they are working on that. I wish you could combine orders (B&W, normal), but everything must be on the same paper. Also, you either have to color-correct the entire order or not -- you can't just select individual pictures to color correct.

However, that being said, they are quick and do a great quality jobs with the pictures.

I think that they do a fabulous job. I had always used Costco, but on my last big order I used MPIX. The quality was fabulous....try the matte board finishing option.....it's great!!!

I have to agree that mpix is the best. They're the best printing company I've used (and I've tried a bunch). I've been pleased every time.

Depending on the print, you may want to try their metallic/pearlescent paper. B&Ws especially appear really brilliant. It's super glossy and has a really eye-catching quality to it. You might not want to use it on a color portrait, but I'd suggest that you give it a try.

Here's what I did with my MPix albums. I don't want to have to move a red box around to choose what to crop, so I have cropped/adjusted in PS each photo to 5 x 7, 8 x 10, 10 x 13, and 11 x 14. I then upload each size to its own album at MPix. I can choose which size I want to order without having to worry about cropping online.

Great tip John. Harry, I know they use professional paper and they are a sister company to Miller's lab which is one of the best pro labs! 99.9% sure it is archival. I have used pro labs and see nothing better than mpix!

I too am trying to find a better place to print my photos. After reading this thread I sent two photos to MPix to try them out. I should get them in a couple of days.
