First Wedding Jitters

First things first, I have a Minolta Dimage 7, Minolta Mazzum 5600 flash, and portrait modeling lights...

I'm about overcome with what amounts to stage fright at this point in the game. I have been reading the posts on "first weddings," and it sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, this wedding business. The couple I am doing this for is the daughter/fiance of friends from church. They planned their wedding quickly, (and couldn't get another photographer so quickly) as they are both in college and going on co-ops. Her mother told me they wanted to ask me to do it because of my portrait and ladscape work, but were emabarassed to. I thought, awww, that's sweet! And so I offered to do it for them, for no charge. Now I'm thinking I must have been posessed or high or having an out of body experience! What was I thinking!!? I was the light holder/gofer for five years for my parents who did wedding photography for 10 years, and thankfully, my mom will be on hand helping with the posing, but this time it will be me behind the camera. I have some wedding experience, but that was a long time ago, and I am petrified--wedding photography has changed so much! It used to be a series of more or less standard shots; now it's more like photojournalism, or "a day in the life..." This is my first BIG wedding. August 12th is the big day. Suggestions??

You will do fine. Just take the standard posed shots and plenty of candids. Don't worry about the stage fright. Barbara Streisand still gets stage fright and she performs beautifully.

looks like you'll be shooting 90's shots. Your biggest worry is to make them in focus. So concentrate on that

  MISTY ,
YOU WILL BE JUST FINE , LISTEN TO KERRY.
AND YOU WILL FIND THERE IS ALL KINDS OF AMAZING STUFF YOUR SUBCONCINSE HAS STORED UP THERE ,
DURING ALL THOSE YEARS OF HELPING MOM AND DAD.
I BET YOU'LL BE ABLE TO SEE THOSE POSES EVEN WITH OUT MOM THERE.
TRUST YOUR SELF, YOU HAVE TO START SOME WHERE.
DEBBY

  Hi Misty,
You are starting out with a big advantage by having your mom there. This is just a suggestion but when I started out doing wedding photography I visited several wedding photography sites just to get a feel for what brides were expecting from their photographer and what photojournalism was all about. I always get nervous before a wedding but as soon as I arrive at the wedding those jitters go away and my creativity kicks in. Don't pay attention to every comment that you read focus on the positive comments and the encouragement of your friends and family.

Just a quick comment to Debby and Kerry I think it is awesome the support you provide to others with your positive and reassuring comments. It takes alot of nerve and confidence to attempt your first wedding but it only takes one negative or criticizing comment to plant a seed of doubt. Debby I have read several of your comments to other aspiring wedding photographers and have to tell you how much I admire your comments and the way you stand up to those few photographers who have forgotten what it was like standing in front of a bride for the first time with a camera in their hands and their insides feeling like they were going to jump out. Keep up the support and thanks for making Better Photo a Better Place.

  Well Laurie,
back at ya!!
that's what it is suppose to be about right?
I mean really who would want to join a group that would knock ya down every time you tryed to stand up?
belive it or not there is a site out there just like that!!!
and I belive that's what makes this one so plesent-people like you and then some of the rest of us that knows what it was like to wait INTO our lifetime to get a chance to do what we enjoy.
I'm not saying sugar coat it all- but, back 'em up as they make that big dission to take steps into a venue-
be it weddings or a new studio and that type of investment-
give 'em deccion making info.
But don't make the deccion.
Thank you again for the wonderful comments.
Debby
and by the way nice gallery!

Thank you Laurie. I'm with Debby. What good does it do to knock people down when they only want a little help? Thankfully, I was too young and dumb when I shot my first wedding to know I could mess it up. Thankfully I didn't. Misty already has the knowledge to handle this wedding. She just needs a little confidence boost.
