Which lens to choose?? I am considering buying a new lens for my Canon Digital Rebel 300D and am wondering which would be the most appropriate and versatile (price is an issue, got to watch my pennies!): Sigma Telephoto 105mm f/2.8 DG Macro Autofocus, or, Sigma Zoom Normal-Telephoto 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC Autofocus, or Canon Zoom-Telephoto EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM Autofocus. I'm not much into all the technical stuff, but I like to take scenic shots, macros, and would like to be able to take shots of birds and subjects that are hard to get close to without a telephoto lens. Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks! Elisabeth Ann Gay

Sigma 105 f/2.8 Macro is a terrific macro lens, but not nearly long enough for birds/wildlife where you want at least 300mm. 55-200 is also too short a focal length for birds, and not close focusing enough for macro. Canon EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM has some really nice features (fast/silent ring-USM focusing and non-rotating front element), but close focus for macro is not one of them. Better in the same price range would be Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 APO Macro.

Thank you so much for your quick response Jon, and for all the information. I have added the Sigma 70-300 to my wish list - as I live in the Bahamas I have to travel to the US to buy it, so I'm trying to hold my patience for a couple of months longer!! I really appreciate your help. Ann
