Going on a press trip

I've recently been getting my feature stories published in a variety of newspapers (weekly and daily), some websites and soon, a regional magazine. A PR firm spotted some of my stories in some local newspapers, likes my work and is interested in my visiting a few of their destinations for potential stories in magazines and newspapers. Some of these properties require air transportation. What is the protocol in this sort of situation? What is involved in taking a press trip? Does the PR firm pay for everything? Do they make the bookings for you, or do you have to do this? Do you submit expenses, or do they handle the payment ahead of time/ Are you required to sell your potential stories ahead of time before they agree to send you on a trip? Help! I don't want to appear like I don't know what I'm doing....Very exciting for me though!

take a deep breath mary, ahhhh, now go contact the pr firm and ask.asking questions is not stupid.if they are legit, they should pay for everything.contact them and find out, surely they wouldn't expect you to pay for something they want.but be up front with them, that way they will know your a real person.
that's what I would do,sam

Sam, thanks for your response, but I need some guidance from someone who has already done some travel writing, and/or who has gone on press trip so I can position myself as professionally as possible. Unfortunately, as I've found in the art world, information is not often shared freely, or it is assumed you should know certain things before venturing forward.

If all goes well, I hope to be going solo to Ventura, and then an official "press trip" with some other writers/photographers to Vancouver B.C. Magazines, news bureaus, etc. pay for their correspondents to go, but if you're not being paid on assignment, then you just go (expenses paid if you're lucky), and try to sell the stories later...
