  Hi guys,
I would love to join all of you. I just still have a difficult time justifying going out to Seattle for a few days, being I live in Cape Cod, Ma. It really adds up to a lot of money in the end. I was also hoping there would be some post summit program.
Maybe next year it can be held in New England area.
Bob enjoy !!!! Say hi to Bryan for me.

  Joe,
I do know about the pre-summit, but it is at the same time as the Photoshop world convention in Boston, which ends Fri. Origanily they talked about a post summit, which may have worked out better for some people.

  Back to the top...:-)
I don't want to be the only one there with all these great instructors/photographers! It's only 10 days away.......
I'm a bit anxious.....what do I say?.."Hi, pleasure to meet you"..."Were you born with a natural eye?"..."Will Molson Canadian really help me shoot better weddings?"

Well, I'm here at the Summit. Oh my God! Talk about motivation! All these fantastic shooters in one room! And they are all real, all approachable, all more than willing to share their collective wealth of knowledge. No swelled heads here, well, 'cept for Bryan Peterson (aka, "the rock star") who probably has more hair than half the group put together..:-) Words cannot describe the experience!!
The lectures are short, 30 minutes to 1 hour per lecturer...which usually turned into 40 min to 1 1/2 hr due to the enthusiasm of the attendees. So with the frequent change of lecturers, the talks never became boring....bang bang bang....my head is spinning.
I would recommend this Summit experience to everyone!!!!!

  To my dismay, it's over.
I would like to thank Jim Miotke and his whole staff for a well choreographed and fun weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The lectures, again today, went over their alotted times.
Ben Willmore wow'd us with the magic of PS CS2...it's amazing...out of my price range, but still totally amazing. It was noted by several instructors, tho, that some of the "wow" in cs2 was borrowed from pse3.
Tony Sweet gave a great presention on flowers. "Pick the background first", then put or find your subject infront of the background.
Kathleen Carr on polaroid transfers. Great concept and artestry involved. It's not something I'd like to do, but it was very interesting....as were her infrared photos.
Brenda Tharp, now there is a motivator!! Of all the books I've read, and all the great lecturers I heard this weekend, ....SHE made me want to get out and shoot!!!
And, I noticed that each lecturer would say, "the image I MADE", or, "when I MADE this picture", or, "when you MAKE an image".....So, I guess it's up to us to MAKE an image, not just go out willy-nilly shooting here/there/and everywhere hoping something will gel.
Lastly, but should be firstly, they said...practice, practice, practice... and then practice somemore.

Bob

No, I decided not to ask about the judges. It didn't seem to be appropriate to me at the time.
And since I'm a structured, do it myself type person, I'm gonna try shooting raw for awhile...:-)

  Hi Bob,

I just wanted to say thank you very much. We could not have pulled it off without great people like you.

What a great weekend! Some of the highlights for me were:

* Bryan saying that photography is more important than anything - dinner, family, spouses. "I remember my weddings..."

* Ben's showing us CS2 - fantastic stuff. There are so many ways to do something in Photoshop but these tricks make me want to go buy the upgrade today.

* Brenda and Tony and Kathleen's amazing imagery. I agree completely - so inspiring! Can't you hardly wait to take your next photo trip?

Great weekend! Thanks so much for coming and for your kind feedback.

  Hi Everyone!!

Thanks, Jim, for a truly memorable experience. I loved this site before I went and I love it even more now. What a wonderful group of people.....felt like a big family.

I would vote Brenda most inspiring , Ben most informative, and Bryan the most dynamic speaker. But I enjoyed every single speaker...an amazing line up!!!!!

For anyone thinking about going next year......it was well worth it!!!!

I think at the Seattle Summit, we had someone from the UK, Brazil, Mexico and either Sri Lanka or the Philipines I can't remember for sure. And one of the instructors, Robin Nichols, from Australia...and Bryan Peterson from France.
So, I guess, as the saying goes, "build it and they will come"...:-)

Wow, well they must have some money. I just didn't have the dough to cut it this time around. Plus I'm so early in my career and as a peuny e-3, if I can come up with $1000 or so (including airfare, hotel, and food) i'd probably be buying me some upgrade equipment. BUT that's just me being a youngin.

As much as I would enjoy the summit, I'd probably spend $1,000 on equipment as well. I love toys! If they had one in the midwest, like right smack in the middle of the country, I'd be there. I've probably traveled a million miles since 1988 so traveling isn't all that attractive to me anymore.

If any local police monitor this forum and you get calls about an old/grey haired guy with a Coors Light in his hand camped out by a mailbox, that'll be me...:-)
And, Jim, thanks for the short quiz about whether we should be shooting raw or not. I landed in the "shoot raw" category....it's totally amazing the difference between it and jpeg. I never knew.

Out of all of the discussion threads that I have read...I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one the most!

Bob, I truly think you need to set your camera up on your tripod, use your self-timer and get a shot of yourself with your Coors Light in front of your mailbox! (Of course then share it with everyone.)

I was also not able to make it to Seattle, but loved hearing about it! Jim, if you are continuing to read this discussion...Chicago would be ideal! My favorite city in the US!

  Hi Everyone,
Joe, thanks for sharing your beautiful images from the Pre Summit shoot. I love the Lake Sammamish dock image the most. (In the summer, I partake in early morning swims at Lake Sammamish).
Also, Bob, thanks for your appreciation of Betterphoto, as always, we love your support.

We just finished a quick meeting about the 1st Annual BP Summit and I think that the highlight for us BP staffers, was meeting the wonderful Betterphoto Members. We really enjoyed getting to know all of you in person as opposed to our continual electronic correspondence.

Looking forward to next year already!

I have 3 new projects that I am going to start working on for next year. I enjoyed meeting the instructors at BetterPhoto, and most of all, taking home alot of wonderful memories! All Priceless!!!!!

Jim & everyone in the pre-summit workshop -- I had an absolute blast! Sometimes it is hard to tell that I'm having a blast when on my stomach on the ground or pushing brush out of the way or stepping into water to get the shot -- but I certainly was. And to see it all come together in the slide show was GREAT! I love meeting my instructor for the past 6 months -- Bryan Peterson -- and meeting Jim & Kerry -- and listening to all the wonderfully creative and essentially different teaching personalities involved in Betterphoto. Betterphoto will keep me busy for years and years. Have the Summit anywhere you like ... and I will try to be there. I'm hooked. Kristie Defenbaugh

Wonderful speakers: Robin-very funny, Bryan-inspiring, Vik- creates amazing magic with children, Ben-excellent teacher (have a blast in your new home on the big bus)
I really enjoyed meeting so much of the BetterPhoto staff. It was great to meet the faces behind the names of members too.
Can't wait for next years summit,I'll be there!

Maybe you can talk the 'powers that be' into a summit in Colorado. The city of Denver is a wonderful host to events like that. And not a more beautiful place for photography!!

I got there 3-4 times a year and the options are endless!! any season too!

Everyone, have a great day!

I'll add to the growing list of people who had a great time. I don't know of anywhere else you could go to get access to so many incredibly talented photographers all in one place. All of the instructors gave informational and inspiring presentations, and for anyone considering the pre-shoot for next year, I highly recommend it. Not only did we have fantastic light and get wonderful pictures, I met and learned from a very talented and fun group of people! Thanks Jim and Team for a great time!

Joe, I agree with everything you said about the pre-summit workshop and the workshop. I showed my Seattle pictures to my tax classes yesterday and they were 'wow-ed' by them especially the night picture of the Seattle skyline with the building and city lights just coming on. I included Mt Ranier in the right hand portion of my picture which showed up in subtle blues/purples. Wonderful time. Kudos to all involved. Kristie

I had an incredible time and am really inspired to move on with my photography! The Summit was everything and more that I hoped it would be. The Better Photo community is truly remarkable. All of the instructors did a great job and had something to offer in his or her own way! I found the other students to be extremely friendly and helpful, as were the instructors. It was hard to believe we were all meeting for the first time. Jim, I'm looking forward to next year, so please don't let us down! Thank you to everyone for a wonderful funfilled week-end!   Thank you so much Jim, Denise and the rest of the team for making this wonderful summit possible. You were all very kind and helpful, I feel like I've know you all for years!
In the few days since, different things have played back in my memory. So much information was packed into this short weekend. Enough to keep me going until next time.
You all lent to us practical, as well as technical information that will be practiced for the rest of my photographic career. I can't wait to see what new information you'll add next time. (In the ever changing technical world.)
This experience was so inspiring that I've made it a morning ritual to first read my Betterphoto.com email with coffee in this great Betterphoto coffee cup,(compliments from the gang at the summit) and then write down what that one new summit lesson for the day will be that I want to put into practice.
Possibly the most important lesson of all was that in order to make great images, is that we need to know our equipment, film or digital, and treat it as an extinction of ourselves.
You were all wonderful teachers and examples of what I'd like to become with time and practice. Again, Thank you everyone! Counting the days until you next year! (Wherever you decide to have it, count me in!!!) Penny

I had a wonderful time at the Summit! Thanks to Jim and his staff and the wonderful speakers for doing a great job. I learned a lot and was also inspired like the other students to go take photos! I am still in the area visiting my sister and taking photos daily!

Yes a "C" - you got that quiz question right :)

I have a question for all of you: if BetterPhoto was to come to a city near you, how important is it that you meet MANY instructors? That gets very expensive so one option we are considering is having a BetterPhoto Roadshow event with just 1 instructor teaching for a day or two, with 1 or 2 BP staffers there to help answer your questions. Would this be a deal-breaker for you? I know many people at the recent Summit enjoyed meeting so many instructors. Is this the main value to you or would you go to a more seminar-based Roadshow with just one instructor?

Be honest, brutal if you like... this will help us make sure we deliver what you most want.

(And I hear New York, Chicago, Boston, Montreal, Denver... and others?)

Hi Bob, yes that is where I was sitting. Were you on the same row? I can't remember names very well!

My sis and bro in law took me to Port Townsend, Hurricane Ridge and Deception Pass over the weekend and I got lots of photos but have not looked at them yet. My niece took me to Pike Place Mkt, the docks, Alkai beach today. I hope to transfer the pix to her computer and burn them to CDs soon.

Joe, I am thinking of events in addition to the the main annual Summit. I am considering San Francisco for the annual Summit but am heavily leaning toward keeping it in Seattle, at least for next year. So, in addition to this, I am considering a few just outside other major cities in the U.S.

Judy, I look forward to seeing your images. It's a lot of work to transfer and edit them but it'll be worth it, I'm sure :)

  Jim,
I sure hope that you keep the summit in Seattle!!! I enjoyed it so much....I thought the hotel was great as well. There's so much to see and do in that area. Of course it's perfect for me seeing that I'm only a few hours away!!!!
I loved watching Vik work with your adorable little boy. I do a lot of kids and I realize that I have so much to learn from watching her. That was a highlight for me anyway!!!!

I think as long as its in addition to the summit, only having 1 instructor would be fine for the roadshows. More than likely people who are going there would be travelling from local geography, so may not be as expensive. What is your thinking on the topics of the roadshow? A shoot? or would it just be instruction/semimar? As for the location of the annual it doesn't matter much for me personally coming from Chicago, both are about the same. I understand the concerns about cost travelling to the West coast, but honestly I think this year showed that the value for the money was incredible.

Judy, I was behind you and on your right side.......I've lived in the Pacific Northwest all my life...never been to Deception Pass...made it to Huricane Ridge a couple years ago..been thru Pt Townsend but never stopped..I should get out more to places other than my usual haunts that are getting stale!
Jim, ...personally, I would not have gone to the Summit if it was not short driving distance....should my photograpny skills blossum (become noticed)in the future, I would consider spending more money to travel further. The main draw for me was the chance to meet/hear so MANY renowned photographers all at the same time.

I just found this site today -- a bit belatedly. I second all the strongly positive comments of all pre-summit & summit attendees. It truly was an incredible event & the pre-shoot made it seem like just that alone was at least a week long. I learned so much & learned how much I have to learn! Jim & Kerry were fantastic on the shoot, to say nothing of the other shoot members (Joe & Kristie & the rest of the crew) & the whole line-up of BP teachers & photographers was truly awesome. I honestly was expecting to be bored & was planning on taking breaks from some of the talks, but I NEVER once even considered leaving my chair. There wasn't a boring talk there & what a bunch of unique & dynamic personalities & SO much talent brought together through Jim's efforts thru BP! Amazing Jim!

As for this year, the relatively short distance made a difference for me. AFter this year's experience, I might go almost anywhere. I also think a "roadshow" of a couple of photographer/teachers could work but think it also might have more appeal if there were a pre or post-lecture option of at least a 1-day shoot, if that were possible. That really made the event an amazingly powerful experience for me. Having it before the Summit was particularly nice because we had a group of people we knew from which to expand & reach out & include others. It made it a very rich experience for me. Again, thanks to you Jim & Kerry, and to all of the BP team -- everyone who made the whole even possible. I know everyone had to have worked incredibly hard to get that first Summit off the ground. And Jim, I thought "our" slide show came out really great -- music & all. Thanks for all your work on that (even if you left off you sitting on the brass pig, which I guess I should upload here, just in case it otherwise doesn't see the light of day :) ).

Jim ... I'm a few comments back ... I agree with Joe that if having a single instructor for a day or two would be great as long as it is in addition to the major summit with many instructors. It was great to see so many great people together in one place. But a seminar with one instructor would be quite worthwhile as well. I loved Seattle and would love to visit there again and again. But I love to travel so have the summit anywhere ... Chicago, New York, Houston, anywhere ... and I will try to attend. BTW is Houston or Dallas among the choices for individual instructor seminars? or the summit? Kristie

Oh, yes, and I agree with Kathy about the pre-summit or post-summit workshops. That was an absolute blast for me. How often does a serious photographer get to run around taking pictures with other serious photographers? ( Jim Fitz. may be a serious photographer but I'm not sure that I can say he is truly serious all the time ;) ) Kristie in Houston

I have to agree w/ Kristie about Jim F. & seriousness :) but I also have to say I am much more serious about photography now than I was before the summit & it truly is due to the preshoot & being around professional & maybe not professional photographers, but awfully darn good "amateur" photographers. I spent the morning (not dawn, due to a Dr. app't, hehe) out shooting at a new park & got noticed by the park's designer (The park is designed to clean all the runoff for several square city blocks & is very innovative.) He ASSUMED I was a professional & asked who I worked for & wanted my pics, giving me his card! I have to say I WAS using my NEW, lighter tripod, a direct result of my 1st experiences using an ancient dinosaur of a tripod on the preshoot.

  Hi everyone,
Wow, what fun reading! The Summit was such a fantastic event ... along with all of the other instructors and staffers, I really enjoyed meeting everyone.

And, as just pointed out by Kristie and Kathy (and Joe earlier), the Pre-Summit Photo Tour of Seattle was such a wonderful experience ... up early and out late. We were privileged with fine light, fine locations, and great camaraderie!

Seriously, though, I am not sure why it is not uploading.

Kerry is so right. Every day since the Summit, I am reminded of how fortunate we were with the light and the weather. I hope you all fully appreciate how unusual those conditions were. That was an awesome two days.

Enjoy! And if you have pictures of the event, please upload them and send the photoIDs to Kerry.

The summit sounds so great and I really want to join. Unfortunately, I am too poor. I couldn't attend. I also think a pre or post summit photo shoot is great. If there is a roadshow with just one instructor in Toronto, I think I will join. Hehe, I live in Toronto. This can help cutting the buget. I don't have to worry about paying for the air flight or hotel and so on. Even if there is a workshop with just one instructor, and if it costs only a few hundreds dollar, I may be able to join too.

I always feel disappointed that there isn't any workshop, like those take place in US or Europe, in Canada. If BetterPhoto can host some workshop in area around Toronto. It will be great!

I would love to attend/participate in this type of events, but I know it is out of my reach also for now... and thinking, this is for the ones in the elite class... but I can dream as I read how the attendees and participants enjoyed the summit. Thank you for those photos posted here and galleries, etc. I can now see the faces behind these great dialogue and conversation in this thread.

BTW, thanks to Jay, or whoever managed to get "Jim's portrait" (aged a bit) onto the thread, but I find it interesting that Jiim's blocking device was applied to the thread to keep the two pics that actually showed him on the pig OFF the thread. Hmmm. What say, Jim???

And Bob, when you said you enjoyed Jim on the pig & then "if it's in Seattle next yr, you'll do the pre-shoot," I just wondered if the "it" referred to the immediately preceding antecedent (Jim on the pig -- Jim &/or or both together -- still in Seattle) or the Summit was in Seattle! :)

  "immediately preceding antecedent "

Just a minute, let me ring up my 8th grade English teacher...:-)

"It" refers to the Summit being in Seattle again.

Thanks, Nobi! I'd still be extolling the Summit's virtues, but this thread would probably die on the vine if I did.

Maybe BP should consider just an open thread (like this one), that doesn't really have to do with photography as such, but, so we could just talk??

I've had one day off work since the Summit...my next day off is this coming Sunday...I've had no shooting time. Does anyone else get withdrawal??
