Photography Question

Taking action shots indoors

I cover a lot of martial art tournaments (mainly brazilian jiu jitsu). Depending on the venue, sometimes I need to use my flash, sometimes I don't. I have a Canon 20D and a Speedlite 580 flash. I've found that sometimes when I need to use my Speedlite, that the pictures come out almost black in my display.

I've played with the settings, and it works after a while, but I'm wondering how to get it to adjust manually. For instance.... I could be sitting at one mat covering that match, then look over to a fight going on 2 mats over and want to snap a shot - it's those that sometimes come out black. Does it have to do with the range of the flash? I don't want to have to change my settings constantly... as they're action shots and I normally just get one try at capturing it.

Any suggestions on how to shoot these indoor events? Thanks!

Can you clarify if you are shooting in auto or manual mode?

I've done both. Usually I leave it in manual so I can adjust it depending on the venue lighting.

Probably, yes.

Is there a way to set the flash to adjust automatically to whatever range I'm trying to shoot? The flash is new, so I'm still learning the specifics of it.

Set to auto (E-TTL) it does adjust to distance, as much as it can. You can extend the usable distance by shooting at higher ISO (doubling ISO extends maximum distance by 1.4x), and by using faster (ie. wider aperture) lenses.

Thanks! I'm covering a tournament tomorrow ... I'll try that out.
