tripod case I fly frequently and typically place my tripod in a large suitcase, even when my trip doesn't require such a large bag. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to travel with a tripod (e.g. do you check it or carry it on; are there any good, hard cases or padded bags that can be used to check my tripod, etc). Any input is appreciated. Cheers. -Chris

Just read this recently, maybe in a photo magazine: You know those canvas folding chairs that come in a bag with a shoulder strap? The bag can make a handy carry bag for a tripod. If you're checking it on a plane, maybe you could wrap some foam or bubble wrap around the tripod before you put it in the bag.

Chris G, Chris V. is right on (as usual). My old tripod (I accidently left (lost) it at a shoot three days ago) fit perfectly in a folding chair bag if I left the legs extended to the length of the bag. The strap made it handy; however, as Chris mentioned, there is no padding protection for the tripod, so additional padding is in order. VR John

Wouldn't try taking a tripod as carry-on these days, and mine's always in check-in baggage. Bubble wrap is great (and light). I've also wrapped mine with soft stuff like thick socks covered with a large ziplock to keep them in place. Kneepads for photographing close to the ground are nifty for tripod protection also. And my favourite solution: my photography backback has padded sidepockets I take off and slip over the disassembled head and the top of the feet part where the screw thingy is (as she descends into technical jargon).

Thanks for the ideas. I actually have one of those folding chairs I need to dig out of my closet.
