Sharpness and Color Seem To Lack

I recently purchased a Nikon D70 last fall. With several years of experience using Nikon SLR's w/mostly Nikkor lenses, thus far I have been disappointed in the overall quality of the images taken.

I am relatively new to digital photography. When I purchased my Nikon D70, in order to save costs and the expense of buying multiple lenses, I bought a Quantaray 28-300 Zoom lens. Thus far, most images appear on the soft side, in particular, portraiture. The color seems muted, compared to other digital images I looked at taken with "less expensive digital cameras."

Did I make a mistake here? Note...I have not purchased any digital editing software to date.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sell the Quantaray and get a few prime Nikkors.
You've spent a lot on a decent DSLR,...why skimp on what is actually taking the picture.

Next to human error,...your lens is your weakest link to image quality.

Hi TJ, what file format are you taking the pictures in? JPG? RAW?
