Photography Question

Sandy Jimenez-Huizar

Please critique my work.

I have been taking photographs since I was 11 and received my BFA with concentration in Photography. As I have been out of college since 1999. I have not been able to get some of my current work critiqued. Please be honest and don't be afraid to be critical. Note, the first photograph (Sunset going North) was taken when I was 11 years old when the Kodak 110 was around. I feel that is where I found that I love photography.

  Sandy,
You have some great photos. On your flower photos, you tend to center your photos. Try using the rule of thirds. That was a habit of mine that I'm currently trying to break. On your waterfall photos, try using slower shutter speeds, around one to two seconds, and it will give you a soft effect on the water. I have a few in my gallery like that, so check them out and see if it is something that you would be interested in doing. On rushing waters, I like the next one untitled 01 better because it shows more of the waterfall.

  Sandy,
I think there aren't enough photos to actually give any valuable feedback.
I personally think that the ones you placed in your gallery are ok but really need some work to get them in the Wow category.
I would like to recomend you two books that combined were an eye opener for me, and actually showed me how far or near was I from making a nice photographic composition.
"Understanding exposure" and "Learnig to see creatively" by Bryan Peterson. I could not tell you how much these books actually marked me and the way I see (and waht I get to see) trought the viewfinder, it is kind of funny since all of the pictures have a short story and the specs under they were taken, you can actually feel like you are not that far from those pictures, but at the same time you know you have a long road to travel to get there.. thanks to these books my hunger to gather as much information on how to creat great compositions just got bigger.

The books let me understand when to use what kind of speed, what kind of aperture, what about some filters, when to use telephoto when not to use it, whats the importance of a tripod, how many pictures should I be taking to get an amazing composition and so on..

Considering your pictures this is by far the best advice that I can give you, I was feeling the same way you are now (kind of lost), I was just lucky to come across such great books.

Brendan - Thanks for the advice on using the rule of thirds and the slower shutter speeds. I will have to just get out there and try those tips. You got some great photos too. I really enjoy the water ones.

Victor - Thank you for your feedback. I will be at the bookstore this weekend looking for the copies of the books you mentioned.
