Photography Question
Carlos Duron

What to charge when working for other photographer

I have been photographing for years but this past year I have started getting seriously into it and have started promoting myself. I have gotten a couple of jobs shooting weddings for some other photographers and was wondering what would a fair amount to charge for my services. I would charge $600 as a minimum for a low budget wedding if I was doing everything myself. I have been getting $200 for just shooting the pics. Is this amount the norm?

Thxs in advc for any response

It really depends on your market area. Big cities and areas where the cost of living is higher can support higher prices than rural areas.

Do you think any of the photographers you have worked with would share their price lists with you? Seeing what prices they are actually able to get from customers would be a better guide for you than comparing what photographers make in other areas.

Good luck.

  CHRIS,
IS RIGHT THE ANSWER LIES IN FIRST KNOWING WHAT THE MARKET IN YOUR AREA WILL BEAR. AND IF YOU ARE STILL UNSURE WE CAN HELP MORE WITH THAT KIND OF INFO.
MAY I SUGGEST YOU OR A FRIEND /FAMILY MEMBER CALL THE DIFFERENT PHOTOGRAPHERS WITHIN YOUR AREA AND GET A IDEA.
THIS IS ONE OF THE FIRST ASSIGNMENTS I GIVE PEOPLE- THIS WAY THEY KNOW THIER POTENTIAL WORTH AS A PHOTOGRAPHER.
IT'S NOT JUST TAKING PICTURES- IT'S YOUR ART- IF YOU ARE DOING IT RIGHT AND WELL PHOTOGRAPHY IS A ART FORM. AND AS SUCH IT'S NOT TAKING PICTURES(THAT ANYONE CAN DO) IT'S PHOTOGRAPHING AN EVENT- IT'S PORTRAITS NOT PICTURES. MANY YEARS AGO I WENT CRYING TO A FELLOW BUSINESS PERSON ABOUT MY FRUSTRATIONS- SHE LET ME HAVE IT-SHE DID!- I WENT TO HAVE HER CONSOLE ME AND SHE LET ME HAVE IT.
" 1ST KNOW YOUR MARKET" " MAKE YOUR SELF KNOWN, BY YOUR WORK" "LOOK PROFESSIONAL EVERY DAY" AND LAST " ACT LIKE YOU WANT TO DO BUSINESS BY TIEING ALL THIS TOGETHER AND BEING CONSISTENT"
THIS HELPED ME ALOT ,I DO HOPE IT HELPS YOU- KNOW YOUR MARKET AND YOU ARE A WORKING PHOTOGRAOHER- YOU TAKE PORTRAITS AND DO PHOTO JURNILISIUM
( EVEN IF YOU CAN'T SPELL IT,LOL- EVER HAVE ONE OF THOSE MOMENTS WHEN NOTHING LOOKS RIGHT,LOL)

CARLOS, WE WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK IN YOUR VENTURES,
DEBBY

Jill M. Higgins   Hi,

The going rate around here is $75/hour to assist a photographer at a wedding. That's what I get paid when I assist. I'm given a list of shots to be sure to get - then I just hand over the flash card and the photographer handles everything else.
