Indoor lighting

I am beginning to experiment with indoor portriats, digital, and have trouble with the lighting. I am just using household lamps and natural window light. I know I need some sort of "real" lighting setup but there is so many to choose from and all kinds of prices. What do you suggest in the moderate price range?

Well, if you use both at the same time, you are using competing light sources (in regard to color temperature). One inexpensive way is to use slave flashes. It takes some experimenting to get them set up right weithout modeling lights but you will get the hang of it.

  LISA,
HERE IS A GUY I RECOMMEND TO MOST PEOPLE . I ALSO BUY AND USE HIS EQUIPMENT .

YOU MAY HAVE TO START SLOW BUT AT SOME POINT IF YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE PORTRAITS A CARRER THAN I WOULD SUGGEST AS I DO TO ANY ONE DOING PORTRAITS - GET A 3 LIGHT SYSTEM.
I ANSWER QUEASTIONS ALL THE TIEM ON FLAT PORTRAITS- A BACKLIGHT IS THE ANSWER TO THIS PROBLEM.
ONE LIGHT WILL WORK BUT THEY WILL BE FLAT- 2 LIGHTS WILL BE GOOD-1 MAIN AND 1 BACK LIGHT- 3 LIGHTS WILL GIVE YOU , 1 MAIN ,1 FILL AND 1 BACKLIGHT THIS WILL BE GREAT! AND WHEN YOU FEEL YOU CAN DO MORE THEN GET A FORTH USE IT AS A HAIR LIGHT AND A BACK UP FOR THE OTHERS.
AND UNTIL YOU CAN INVEST IN STUDIO LIGHTING - KERRY IS RIGHT , GET SOME SLAVED FLASHES FROM EBAY - I USE THESE AT ALL WEDDINGS AS FILL LIGHT.
BEST OF LUCK,
DEBBY
