Raw mode in Canon 20D
It looks like I should be able to set my Canon 20D to shoot ONLY raw mode images in the creative modes. And it looks like that is what I have set it to do. It records both raw and high-quality jpeg for each shot. Lots of memory and time wasted. I would like to record high-quality jpegs in the programmed modes and only raw in creative modes. Can I? Hi Arthur, When in creative mode, you can set the camera to only take RAW by going into the menu, select quality, and select the RAW option, which only records RAW images. It sounds like its currently set for RAW + L, which does exactly what you describe, records both formats. Once you do that, go to any of the basic modes, select menu-quality again, and select L. Now when you are in a creative mode, Av for example, you will capture just RAW, and when you go to a basic mode, landscape for example, you will shoot large JPEG's. Hope this helps. Check out pages 46-47 in the 20D instruction manual. Joe

Bummers. I had read the instruction manual, and done just as you say. It records a raw file and a jpeg for each shot anyway. At least in Program mode; perhaps I should try the other creative modes. Thanks for the thought... Arthur

P mode allows you to set any of the RAW formats. So when in P, - Hit the menu button - Use the dial on the back of the camera to select Quality, hit the center button - Use the dial to select L. (there's lots of options, so keep dialing until you select just RAW. Hit the center button again. That should do it.

Either somebody played a joke on you when they made your camera, or you're still doing something wrong. As described before, you have the option to set different qualities of JPEG images, RAW alone, and RAW with those JPEG qualities (and sizes). Hit the menu button, push SET on the quality setting, and then scroll to just "RAW" and hit SET. Keep messing around with it to find out how it works. If you don't push SET, it won't be set to record how you want it.

Well, guys, I don't know how many times I have done as you suggested and it still recorded images in Program mode in both RAW and JPEG. I put it in Program mode and hit menu; for quality it said only RAW as it has all along. In desperation, I just removed and replaced the battery so that the camera rebooted, reset Quality to RAW, and tried again. It worked! Thanks for all your suggestions; add rebooting the camera to your list! Arthur

See p46 of the manual...It states, "Note that in the Basic Zone modes, the RAW and RAW+JPEG formats cannon be selected". Basic Zone modes are" Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports, Night Portrait and Flash Off. The same is true of the full auto (Program AE) which is the little square

Thanks, Nathan. If you read my original question, and the thread that follows, you will see that I have read the manual many times. I am quite aware of the Creative Modes, as I said, and was attempting Raw ONLY in Program and the other creative modes. You will also see that the problem was resolved a while back by rebooting the camera. I had been following correct procedure; the camera's little mind was a bit scrambled. Thanks for your thoughts.
