Photography Question

Comments, please?

Hi Everyone

I have taken family photos for years and always loved it. I'm starting to take things a little more seriously but still only as a hobby which, unfortunately right now, I am not able to spend as much time on as I would like. However, a new digital camera with more memory and a recent trip to Hawaii allowed me to click away to my hearts' content!

I'm actually quite proud of the Girl in the Surf picture (hopefully that won't sound conceited) since it is the first one that I really put any thought into and I'm curious to hear what other viewers' have to say.

I'm also extremely proud of the Chinamans' Hat shot. My daughter snapped it from inside the coach as we were zooming by.

  Jaclyn,
You don't need to apologize for being proud of your pictures. If you're not proud of it, why bother doing it, right?

I'd like to see the Girl in the Surf picture in color. I live near the Mississippi River, so I can see gray water every day. Some B&W pictures just look to me like they would be more powerful in color. Was the original in color, or did you use a B&W setting in the camera?

  Hi Chris

I understand what you're saying but it's the opposite for me. I've always shot in colour and now I love the way B&W looks. However, for this shot, I wish I had the exact same one in colour (I used the b&w setting on the camera). Guess it's better to shoot in colour then you can always convert later if you want to, right? Living and learning.....that's what it's all about!

I agree with Chris (what's the world coming to? LOL). I would have preferred it in color too but it is still a good picture in B&W. It has that B&W mood. I would like to offer a suggestion. Next time you shoot something like this (and I hope you do get to go to Hawaii again), place the subject off to the side. I can imagine this photo with the girl further to the right (with the trees still showing) but with a greater expanse of ocean off to the left. It would give a panoramic feeling without having to have a panoramic print.

Thank you so much for your compliments. It really feels good to have people involved in photography say something nice about my shots.

Kerry, I get your suggestion and appreciate you offering it. Hopefully I'll get to try it one day.

  Hi Jaclyn,
I agree with Kerry about not placing the subject in the middle of the shot.
Also the horizon looks a tiny bit crooked, but that might just be me. I'm definitely a color junkie, and have to agree that if that was bright blue water it would be much more powerful. You're right about shooting color and then playing with it later if you want B&W.
Keep up the good work!
