Hand tinting Black and White photographs I am trying to hand tint some photographs that I took of my son. I took the photo's digitally and had them printed on matte finish paper form Snapfish.com. My problem is I cant seem to get the oils to cover evenly. They are very splotchy. I purchased a can of pre color by Marshalls, but it really didnt help. Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong. I am using Marshalls Oils.

Hi, are you talking about the hand retouching oils, or the way the print was?

I am talking about the hand retouching oils.

Oboy, Im sorry then, I thought maybe you could correct this with the paper, but if it;s the oil, I know nothing about that. You'll probably wind up having to do what I do, waste money on experiments till you find one that works

It could be a paper problem. Can I get digital photos on a fiber based paper?

Well, Tami, I dont know everything there is to know about paper either. I print my own pictures, I dont have them done and then retouch them. but I use HP c1846a whcih is a very fast ink dry smudge free paper and highly resistant to water. Lots of other papers, the ink can be washed off. My impression from reading your question was that you had them printed.I wouldnt know anything about hand retouching on the paper, I always do it in the computer first, then print it. If you still have the digital image stored, can you not do the touchup in PS or one of the other editing programs?

Tami, are you still having problems or have you found the answer to your question regarding "hand tinting"? I've been doing this by hand for many years.

Judy, I think I have discovered the problem, but do not know how to correct it. It seems to be the paper that the digital prints are printed on. Any suggestions?

Try then, the HP c1846a. It is a glossy finish, I know youve been using matte. Possible fiber difference there. And the anti smudge formula may make the difference on ink coverage as well as drying. Oh that paper can be ordered right on the HPshopping.com and the price has come way down now, I just bought some more 50 sheets 8 1/2 x 11 for 19.00 with free shipping.

Tami, paper can affect the way the oils are absorbed. You will not get as even a coat as you would on regular print paper from a lab. I regularly use "canvas" paper which threads thru my printer just fine. You can also go to www.handcolor.com and find a review on the various paper to use for hand tinting. Hope this helps.

You guys really have me curious now on this hand work. Enlighten me, is there a special reason for doing that outside the computer? I know there must be or you wouldnt be doing it.

I like the look of the hand tinting better. It gives it a more old fashion look. It is really simple.

This my just be overlap but thought I would chime in!! I started hand tinting a little while ago, and had the same problem at first with paper, them figured out that it cant have a gloss finnish at all and yes it has to be FB paper. The reason I like doing it by hand is that you end up with more of a pastel color rather than real deep colors that you might get from digital. -Collette-

Hello to all, Sorry I just came across this web-site & questions. For those that are still interested. I print the "old school" fiber-base black & white enlargements. I have several clients that I print for that do hand-tint. I use a paper with a "little tooth" then browntone. I have them mounted then they either have their own artist or do it themselves. I can also have a digital file made into a Black & White negative then print on the real fiber paper. This is an alternative to "digital". I have found several photographers still prefer the real Black & White Fiber compared to the digital. Feel Free to look at my web-site & I will answer any questions you may have. renaissancebw.com Thanks, Deb
