Is this too good to be true?? I found this lighting kit on ebay and it seems to have a ton of stuff with it for not a lot of money. I am setting up a small in home studio and am in the market for reasonably prices strobe lights. Rather than say it's too good to be true, it may make more sense to say that you usually get what you pay for. They sound under-powered to me, but there are other members here who can give you more detail on that. Pay close attention to the last statement in his list of questions. He doesn't carry replacement strobe bulbs, or give you a cost for them. I've heard that some bulbs on "bargain" strobes can cost more to replace than the strobe itself. Also, there are some brands where the strobe bulb can't be replaced at all. Go to www.alienbees.com and read their FAQ. I'm not saying you should buy from there, because I haven't done enough research yet to know what strobes are the best buy. But the FAQ on that site has some very good tips about what to look for.

Brianne, I also wanted a lighting kit for my basement I did a lot of research and one brand that kept comming up was britek for price and quality. I don't know if you have checked these lights out on ebay but the bulbs are cheaper to replace and the lights are really well made for the money. I bought a set and it is just fine for my basement set up. I am very impressed with the softboxes! These are SO nice! Thank you both for your responses. Chris -- I have looked on Alien Bees website, but it looked to me like they only provide continuous lighting...do you know if they sell strobe lights? Melissa...I looked at those lights and they seem really nice. I am a complete novice at this whole lighting thing...were they easy to set up and do your shots with?

They were not that hard to set up and the stands are really pretty heavy (good thing), I was surprised because the pic didn't look as sturdy as they ended up to be. I contacted the guy and asked him about replacement bulbs. You should ask who ever you might purchase from what the cost would be for extra bulbs, like chris said about the replacement bulbs because that IS a big factor! They are easy to set up and do my shots with no problem really. I am having issues with learning about how lighting works it is not as easy as it seems--get lights and waa-laa -- great pics. I am still learning. In my gallery the picture with the girl with the two white flowers and my son with his lacross stick were both taken with the lights.

I just went on and checked the alienbees site and still like what I see...especially now that I know they are for sure strobes!! I also have done some checking on reviews, and have found that their lights have received 5 out of 5 stars. Now, when ordering these lights, do I have to order the softboxes, stands, umbrellas, etc from them, or will other brands work with the lights? Also, one of the packages comes with two umbrellas, but no softboxes. How important are these to have vs. the umbrellas? Thanks again for all your help!!!
