How to shoot product photos of gift baskets

I'm looking for advice on how best and inexpensively to photograph gift baskets that I sell and post on a website. I'm trying to have each of the 50-60 baskets shot the same way so that when customers visit the website, it looks organized and easy to navigate.

I was thinking of using a black back drop from the ceiling and draped over a stand, on which I put the basket for the shot. Is black the best color to use for the back drop? Is the camera flash sufficient or should I use some sort of umbrella or fill light? I'm using a nikon digital and would appreciate any help.

  Hey Tim,
Although I've never done this, I would love to have an assignment like this. Seems fun.
You're right about having a consistant exposure on all of them. Also,
take a look at the web page you are going to post on. I'm thinking a black background will probably clash with their background. I think that the background on product images that don't match the web pages background tend to look unplanned and unprofessional. Give them a color that could easily be cut apart from the basket. Floating images or images that do not have a backgrounds seem to look best on product web pages.
Just a thought, good luck!!

  Tim,
Best to use an off camera flash. IF you have a softbox use it above the baskets. If not, flash through a white bed sheet bad tight in a frame of 3/4 inche PVC pipe. Should cost you less than 12.00. Also, buy a couple of pieces of foam core. Black and white. This will allow you to have reflectors to bounce light back into the image from the off flash side. Use a slow shutter speed to catch a little of the ambient light.
Back grounds. Go with a bright Red, or Yellow. This will capture the eye of people who are looking. Go down any grocery store isle and look at how many of the products use red, yellow in their labling.
Good shooting
Doug
