how to shoot with a black velour backdrop I have been trying to shoot with a black velour backdrop to get the jet black look on my portraits. I've been shooting with a 30x40" softbox as the main and a white umbrella as the fill. There is always spill-over on the drop so the area on the floor (for shooting small children) is always cast with a shiny hue and lighter than the rest. How can I eliminate that and what is the preferred set-up for shooting black drops for infant/child portraits. I would greatly appreciate ANY input. Thanks.

Lynn, I would like to see one of your images to get a better idea of your problem. Please post one for us her in BP-land to see. Without seeing an image, I am going to guess that you have your main and fill lights aimed at the children, and the children are within a few feet of the backdrop. First: try feathering your lights so that only the rim light illuminates the child. Second: move your children about 10 feet from the background. These two ideas should help you see a solid black background. I hope this info is helpful and keep shooting. Doug
