Photography Question

Mary J. Gorton

Dig Camera

I have been casually taking pictures, mostly of dogs, cats, flowers and children. I have a Nikon N65. I really want to upgrade to a digital SLR. I would love to make it a seriuos hobby. What would be a suggested camera? I have been really looking into a Nikon Coolpix 8800, or a D70. Are these cameras worth their money?

  Hello Mary.
Pretty much any brand name camera is worth the money. The real question is does the expense of a new camera match the intended usefulness. For example, if you are looking for a new car, what would be better, a Ford or a Chevrolet? Needless to say everyone has their own preferences. What you should consider is are you using the new car to go to the store once or twice a week or are you going to use it as a taxi? There is much to consider and a large part of purchasing a new camera is the researching, testing, questioning and when it comes right down to it,,,what will you feel comfortable with for the next few years? Take your time, look through the Better Photo Website and read the reviews,,go out and test shoot a few cameras,,,,relax and enjoy the buying experience, it can be very exciting, you really can't make a wrong decision. If you really love photography you will capture great images with a throw away camera.

Regards
Gary.

  Mary,
I took noticed to "seriuos hobby".. I am a novice photographer. I've recently purchased a Nikon D70 and love it. I took some time reading and shopping before my purchase.
I don't want to start a war on camera body & Lenses, I can only say my option is go for the D70.

Good-Luck on your purchase! Let us know how you make out.

Funny that you mention the throw away camera. At my sisters wedding, since I was part of it I didn't want to drag my camera around to be unattended (to much $$$). Anyway, I read (sports illustratted photographer)that if you are exactly 6ft away and have good lighting and don't use the flash no one could tell that it was a chepo camera. So that's what I did during the romatics. They were using a reflecter on the bride and I got 4great shots which my sister added to her wedding album. I was in disbelief until I saw the photos. Its all about the photographer or as I like to say "its not the car, its the driver"

Mary, While the Coolpix 8800 is an outstanding digicam, it isn't an SLR. If you go with the D70, you won't be disappointed; the price is already dropping since the announcement of the D70S. However, if you choose the 8800, you will probably also be very happy with your choice. read the reviews on this site. I highly recommend you check uot the, and other, cameras on www.dpreview.com.

Good luck
John
