Photography Question

Angela Johnson

What's the best digital SLR camera?

I'm an amateur photographer who owns a Nikon N80. I just recently returned from a trip to Paris and decided to take along a small digital (compact) camera - and used it more than my Nikon - ABSOLUTELY loved it. I'd like to buy an a digital SLR camera, but would like to know what people think may be the best product to buy! Remember, I'm new to photography, so simple is best for me ... thanks!

Its more complex than some here seem to think. It's not just between Nikon and Canon. I want a digital SLR, too, and I STILL can't decide.

What we want a camera to do is to use a decently designed lens to focus an image onto a digital collection device. We like little or no noticeable lag time between tripping the shutter and actually making the image. ANY digital SLR does these quite well, especially if we simply buy the maker's 50mm standard or macro lens, or one of the maker's higher quality zooms. ANY digital SLR can present an excellent quality image in what we think of as standard print sizes, maybe up to 11 x 14.

Keeping this in mind, we ought to be giving strong consideration to offerings like the Pentax istD and Minolta 7D. I lean toward the Pentax because it can use the older, plentiful manual focus K mount lenses, enabling cheaper alternatives for specialized uses like macro and wides.

Go to camera stores and HANDLE them all, and see what feels right to you. Look for a truly BRIGHT viewfinder, since a bright, accurate finder is the reason we go to SLR's in the first place. Consider the Nikon that feels most like your N80, since that's what you're used to.

If you're used to using a Nikon you would probably be happiest (at least initially) with a digital Nikon.

Now, at the risk of having a large assortment of people throw hard sharp objects at me, I am going to say that I think Canons are far and away the best cameras----because I love the continuous tones that the cmos produces and dislike any of the cameras with ccds because they seem pixelly to me.

Don't hurt me too much. :)
