camera softboxes and stops I have read that depending on what on camera softbox you by, you may lose 1/2 F-stop or more. Will automatic flashes detect the softbox and compensate?

Beats me. But I think the purpose of the softbox is to difuse/soften/spread the light. I would think that the flash compensating would defeat the purpose?? If the question is will the flash detect the softbox.....I would guess not. Bob who's in a chatty mood...:-)

you need a ttl system that would let the camera detect the light and adjust.

Actually, softboxes can lose up to TWO stops of light. If your flash is TTL, it will compensate automatically, since it's the camera's built-in meter that reads the light on the subject that is at work here. If you don't have TTL, you'll need to shoot manually, and read the flash light with a hand held flash meter. Note - "Auto" mode on your flash will not work unless you have an external flash sensor that you can mount on your camera. Michael H. Cothran www.mhcphoto.net

Thanks everyone. This has helped, I do have TTL, so this answers my questions.

A note on Michael's note: Lumiquest's Softbox and Mini Softbox are designed so that they don't block the flash sensors (on most flashes). This enables the flash to work in full auto (even the focus-assist light still works). I haven't used any other on-flash softboxes, but I'm sure some of them do block the flash sensors. This is something you should consider when shopping for any flash diffuser.
