Photography Question

Joy Fender

How Do I Make A +1 or +2 Exposure?

I plan to attempt this week's assignment. As I am new to the "real" photography, the terminology tends to confuse me at times :-)

I have a Rebel 2000. I understand the concept that the camera's auto sensors may want to under expose a bright snow scene. I understand I need to use +1 to +2 exposure setting. What I'm not certain is exactly what I need to set.

I will be using 200 speed film. My camera has a bracketing function. It also has the ability to manually override the actual film speed. Are either of these what I need to change?

Help! We're expecting quite a bit a snow within the next 24 hours so I have a great opportunity to get this week's assignment on film!

Joy

Psst, Joy. Come here. Let me tell you a secret that will make your life easier. I could tell you how to set your camera to fool it in these conditions but I have an easier way. Leave all the bracketing and exposure compensation buttons alone and do the following (it works in just about any lighting circumstance): point your camera at the palm of your hand and get an exposure reading, then either open the aperture one stop or slow the shutter by one stop. Our palms are one stop over 18% gray and you will always get consistent exposures no matter how much snow or bright light there is. Its like having a gray card in the palm of your hand. You just have to remember to add a stop.
