New Lens or New Camera? I want to purchase a long telephoto, preferably zoom, lens(up to 400-600). I have a Minolta Maxxum 7xi, but don't have a great feeling about it since it sometimes has a "confused" focusing style, going forward and backward many times before arriving at a focus, which may or may not be correct. Should I live with this as it is really nothing more than a nuisance and buy a lens for the Minolta, or consider the purchase of a new camera system such as Nikon, Canon, etc? If so, what kind would you recommend for athletic events and wildlife?

David, I see you also have another question, which is very similar to this one, so I will try to answer it all in one go. The "confused" focusing is usually caused because the camera cannot decide whether the image is focused or not. As a generalisation, auto-focus cameras look for straight lines to focus. If there are none, then the camera will eventually give up. Try it on a perfectly clear day - point the camera at the sky, and because there are no edges, the camera cannot focus. Canon is meant to have one of the fastest auto-focusing systems in the world. I find it quite intelligent, personally, and only have difficulty in moonlight or less. Even under a 60watt globe inside it doesn't even slow noticeably. As for your other question about long lenses - there's a reason why zooms rarely go over 300mm - the sharpness and the maximum aperture drop rapidly after that. (Maybe someone could give me the physics of why that happens in zooms but not in primes?) If you're really considering it anyway, see if you can hire one, or at least shoto a roll in the shop before forking out your money. Hope this helps you. Regards, Ken.
