Finaliasts and Winners

In order for a photo to be a "winner" does it first need to be a finalist for that month's contest?

I think the answer is yes. The winners are chosen from amongst the finalists.

Then it's another disapointing month for me. I really thought "Spinning" had a shot in the April monthly theme category.

Beau, it's so hard for me to tell what the judges will like or not. I got a finalist this month but it wasn't the one that I really thought would earn one. In fact, there were several others I had entered that I thought were worthy of a finalist over the one they chose. But what can you do? I guess just keep studying the winners and keep shooting!

Btw, "Spinning" is such a cute shot! I still haven't figured out the panning technique!

  OMG!!!!

I am a finalist! That was the last thing I expected when I came in this morning! Very excited.

See - If I can become a finalist, then you will be able too!!!

You know I look at the digital dark room catagory and I think WHAT???? The discription on what they look for seems so different than what they pick. I think more photoshop actual skills verses just pasting a filter over the top. But they seem to pick photos that show very little photoshop skill. I am not so sure I get what they look for in the digital dark room catagory. Forexample, Marsha Smith did an elaborate quilt this was a tremendous amount of Talent skill, effort and the quilt was just a fabulous concoction of both photos and photoshop/darkroom skill! It was a pure photoshops fantasy! It would blow any photoshop user AWAY!! But when I looked it was NOT even a finalist???? seriously I don't get it. She also did a fan that was equally incredible that blew my mind!! Talking about incredible photoshop/darkroom skills this one would have professionals pee-ing in their pants!!!! No joke. Not a finalist??? Don't get it! It was the perfect darkroom dream!

  Beau,

I feel really blessed to have gotten an image (WINDY) in the finals.

Plus I am thrilled with the image they picked. I feel it was the best one I put in for the month of April.

But you just never know what they looking for. I think there is a little bit of luck to it.

Kerby

Beau! You know that you are getting close when they picked a photo almost exactly to the tee as a finalist to your stairway picture!! Did you see that-look at the upload dates. There are slight differences look at them and learn but you are really really close!

The answer to the original question is Yes - they pick the winners from the pool of finalists.
Good luck next month!

I have three things I wanted to say real quick:

1) The April "Unforgettable Faces" theme was incredibly packed with great photos this month. It was practically impossible for the judges to narrow it down.

2) No luck in this contest... I don't believe in it. So we don't allow any random selection. Each and every image is reviewed.

3) We are considering adding a service where we offer critiques. There are so many requests each month, we unfortunatly can't do this for free (except very occasionally) but we might have something in the near future which will allow you to get some feedback from the BetterPhoto instructors and behind-the-scenes team.

Have a wonderful week!

First I want to thank DDK for posting the link for this thread in our discussion group. I get so busy looking at photos that I don't get into the Q&A too often.

Second, I think it comes down to the old saying that "Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder". Everyone is drawn to different types of photos. There will always be some type of subjectivity when choosing photos. When I am browsing through the photos, there are always some that jump right off the screen at me even though there may be other shots that are better in regards to composition, lighting, detail and so forth.

I don't think there would by any way that I could narrow down over 18,000 entries into less than 900 finalists much less into the category winners!
