measuring incident light

How exactly one measures incident light with a hand held light meter? I have heard various opinions,i.e. you point the dome towards the camers from subject's position, or towards the light source from subject's position, or even you take various measurements from subject's position and then you average, etc. My question is, what is the right thing to do depending on the situation either indoor or outdoor. Thank you in advance for your help.

  Yannis,

From one of the the masters of the science of exposure, Ansel Adams, an incident meter is held at the subject location and aimed at the camera.

You can cheat some _if_ the camera position is receiving the same identical illumination as the subject, by puting yourself in front of the camera in a direct line with the subject and aiming at the camera.
