I too have a 300D. I have been using a Sigma 24-135mm for portraits with very nice results. I have a Canon 85mm 1.8 for portraits but prefer the zoom with the sigma. I believe the price is around $300. Hope this helps.

I have the Canon Digital Rebel (same camera, different continent). I like the Canon 85mm f1.8 for portraits of 1 or 2 people. It's a very good, but affordable lens. Since many people also call group shots "portraits", I should mention that this lens is a little too long for groups of 3 or 4 or more people. I'm planning to also get the Canon 50mm f1.4 USM lens - another good, but affordable lens. (Not to be confused with the 50mm f1.8 II lens, which doesn't have USM, and is a very cheap $75 lens)

50mm lens equates to a 80mm with the 6 times magnification, which makes the 50mm about the perfect portraiture lens. An 85mm lens is good two for headshots and such.
