In that sense the role of diaphragm is the size of the apeture it makes affects the area that appears in focus in the picture. The more light, the more you can close down the diaphragm for a smaller apeture, which makes the area that appears in focus larger. And that area is called the depth of field. just like your iris closes down to make a smaller pupil the brighter the light is.
