Executive Portraits

I have been doing nature and candid childrens photography for a few years, but never really worked with lighting in a studio setting. I may have the opportunity to shoot Executive Portraits for a well-known insurance company. I'm basically being outsourced by my agency. My commercial business is just getting of the ground so I feel I need to take this gig. The company has their own studio and equipment, I just bring the camera. Any suggestions on resources for posing and lighting for Executive Portraits???

  GOOD DAY SARAH,
MY SUGGESTION WOULD BE TO GO PRACTICE THERE, DO A LIGHT CHECK ECT. I KNOW YOU ARE PROBUBLY WORRIED THAT THIS MAY LOOK LIKE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR
DOING BUT BETTER TO PUT THAT QUESTION THERE ,AND THEN SHOW THEM THAT YOU DO.
I WOULD TAKE MY CHILD OR LOVED ONE THERE AND DO A LIGHT CHECK AND PLAY WITH THIER LIGHTING A LITTLE-NOW , WHEN DOING THIS TYPE OF PORTRAIT, YOU WANT THIER FACE FULLY LITE NO DRAMATIC LIGHTING - A BUSINESS SHOT SHOULD BE A FACE THAT YOU WOULD TRUST, AND NOTHING SEXY-
HAVING A ARM POSER WILL HELP, AND LEANING THE SUBJECT TOWARD YOU IN THE POSE- AGAIN THE FACE IS THE PERSON THAT THIER CLEINT WILL TRUST.
MOST BUSINESS SHOTS ARE HEAD SHOTS AND 3/4 , VERY SELDOM WILL THEY BUY FULL LENGTH.ALSO , VERY IMPORTANT NO EYE CUTS, MAKE SURE THE NOSE IS ANGLED AT YOU OR THE CAMERA SO THAT YOU HAVE FULL VIEW OF THE EYES - IN ANY PORTRAITURE A EYE CUT IS A DISHONEST LOOK-PLAYFUL-A SCAMP. NOT A GOOD LOOK FOR A BUSINESS SHOT.- IF SHOWING HANDS IN A 3/4 SHOT MAKE SURE YOU POSE LADIES HANDS IN A FEMININE MANNER AND A MANS AS STRONG.- I WILL TRY TO FIND SOME EXAMPLES AND GET BACK TO YOU.
I DO HOPE THIS IS NOT TO LATE -THOUGH MY FEAR IS THAT THE SHOOT HAS ALREADY TAKEN PLACE. THOUGH THIS MAY HELP OTHERS.
BEST OF LUCK,
DEBBY TABB

Sarah E. Havard   Thanks Debby, It's not too late. I won the job but I don't start until Mid-June. I'm much less worried about it now however, because I've been participating in Free Model and Talent shoots in my area. I'm much more comfortable with posing. The only thing that remains that worries me is lighting.

People have suggested the same things as you but mentioned syncing up my camera with the lights?? Not sure what that means exactly. Any resources online for that?? I wasn't planning on using a remote or anything just a tripod.

Thanks for your advice!

Sarah

  HEY SARAH,
WELL, AS YOU KNOW THE SYNC IS TO GET THE LIGHTS TO FIRE - YOU WILL NEED A REMOTE OR SYNC CORD TO DO THIS UNLESS, THEY HAVE THEM SLAVED, THEN THEY WILL FIRE WITH THE FLASH ON YOUR CAMERA.
PLEASE , DO LOOK AT SOME MAGIZINES ECT.(SUCH AS BUSINESS MAGS)
I HAVE TAUGHT POSING FOR YEARS AND THIER IS A DIFFERANCE IN THE POSING.
AND IT WON'T HURT - IT CAN ONLY GIVE YOU MORE IDEAS.
LET ME KNOW IF I CAN HELP.

Sarah E. Havard   Thanks, I 've got a few weeks to get my equipment and myself ready. I'm just so lucky this agency is allowing me to learn on their time!

Thanks for your help.

  REQUESTED BUSINESS SHOT
REQUESTED BUSINESS SHOT
I ALWAYS SUGGEST THAT YOU GIVE A CLIENT WHAT THEY (THINK ) THEY WANT , BUT ALWAYS TAKE OTHER VERIATIONS OF IT AND ALWAYS THE WAY YOU THINK IS BEST.THEN WHEN THEY VIEW THIER PORTRAITS WATCH, THEY WILL MOST LIKLY PICK WHAT YOU HAD THOUGHT BEST.NO NEED TO TELL THOUGH.
