Photography Question

Andrew Laverghetta

do you have one of these wide angles zooms?

Hi! I'm looking for a lens to buy this summer for my 20D. I'm looking for a wide angle zoom with a large, constant maximum aperture. The maximum aperture rules out all of Canon's EF-S lenses. Even though one has image stabilization, that won't help with subject motion. So...I wanted to know if anybody has any opinions at all on these lenses:

Tokina Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 20-35mm f/2.8 AT-X 235AF Pro IF Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=148482&is=REG)

Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 20-40mm f/2.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=233772&is=REG)

I see there are some fixed focal length (prime) ultra wide, large max aperture lenses but I'll be using it for photojournalism so I can't always back up or position my subject. So far, the Tokina is winning in my opinion because I know that it has a metal barrel but I'm not sure about the Sigma.

Thanks for your input!

  hey hoosier,
i have a tokina 19-35 for my film camera and i've never had to back up.
great lense, and I bought it used over 5 years ago.but digital crop,i hope I spelled it right,1.5 ?so your wide angle starts at 30mm?i think you want to go down to about 15 or17 to start with, make sense?

Yeah, it makes sense, but I don't remember seeing one of these that has a constant max aperture odf f/2.8 I think 32mm would be wide enough for my purposes though. My crop ois 1.6x. I see Canon has one but it's about $1400 that I don't have a hope of getting any time soon. Well, I will probably get it this summer, but I can't use it on a lens. There's another Canon but it's a constant f/4.0 and that's too small for what I want. Both the Canon's are L's.

Yeah, it is a little crazy. I needed a longer range lens so I got the Canon 200mm f/2.8L for just over $600 and the 20D at the same time so I had to take out a student loan. My big thing is the f/2.8 aperture. I don't need insanely wide though because I'd be using it for photojournalism and without a flash so I need the extra light. Glad to see I made people thing though :)
