Photography Question

Buying 1st Digital SLR

At the constant & continued urging and request of all my friends and family, I am trying to start a home-based photography business. I take mostly outdoor portraits, a few business pics for newspaper ads (portraits also) and sports. I have a Fuji Finepix S7000 and use it mostly in the auto modes as I prefer working more on the composition and subject in the photo than too much technical stuff . I'm looking to take the next step to a digital SLR. I have lenses from an Minolta Maxuum film SLR (AF28-100 & AF 75-300), but the Minolta 7D is pretty pricey. I am also looking at the Rebel XT, 20D as I may be able to get the cameras and lenses for about the same as the Minolta 7D. I am looking for the best image quality and eas of use. Any suggestions on which camera and which lenses would be wonderful!

The Best Image Quality Comes From The Lens! Not The Camera Body Choose a Camera Body That Feels Good To You And Has The Features That You Want, And Buy A Good Lens! And That Is Usually One That Doesent Come With A Camera Kit:-)

In my experience (testing dozens of digital cameras) the image quality is greatly determined by the camera in digital capture.

The lens is important, but all companies make some superb lenses.

With 35mm cameras, the image quality is determined by the film you use. And you can shoot the same film in any camera.

But with digital cameras, the quality of the image can be quite different from one camera to another. Even if both use 6 megapixel sensors.

The Maxxum 7D produces excellent image quality, but in some respects, the Rebel XT is even better. Also, it's an 8 megapixel vs. 6 megapixel camera. And it's much easier to use.

Still, if I owned Maxxum lenses, and were happy with those lenses, I would buy the 7D.

Cheers!

Thanks so much for the advise. I decided on the Rebel XT with kit lense, the Canon 28-125mm IS USM & the 75-300mm IS USM lense. I'm really excited to get some time with this stuff and hopefully will get some professional quality images. Now I just have to make enough money to pay for it all!
