What lenses and how are you setting the aperture? In A mode the aperture ring on the lens (if it has one) must be set to automatic (set to smallest aperture/largest f-number). The desired aperture value is set on the camera.

I have had something similar to this happen when I was using a Nikon D1. I don't think that the D70 has it but I had somehow set the cameras Shutter Speed Lock so I could change my shutter speed in M or S mode no matter what I did. Check out the manual to see if there's anything about any locks on the camera.

I just looked at some stuff on the D70 and maybe you did something with custom function No. 15? I saw that can have something to do with when you use the AF-L/AE-L button. Hope this helps!

When set for Aperture-priority mode, what is being displayed for the aperture value in the camera's LCD? The lens's maximum aperture (eg. "F1.8")? Some other value? Blinking "F--"? "F EE"? Blank? Still fishing...I assume the lens w/o aperture ring is a G-series AF Nikon. There should be no problem with these. Which one is it? WRT the 50 f/1.8, is it AF, or older manual focus version?

P.S. How is Custom Function 14 set? CF 14 = "No" (default setting) then aperture is adjusted in A mode by turning the Sub-Control Dial (index-finger wheel on the front of the grip). CF 14 = "Yes" the aperture is changed in A mode by turning the Main Command Dial (thumb wheel on the back).
