Photography Question

Where Do I Start??

Hi guys,

I'm really interested in photography in general, and I really want to hone in and develop my artistic skills in the art. Does anyone have advice as to where I should begin? I know its such an ambiguous request and situation, but i'm so lost as I would really like to get into photgraphy as a career, but am still a beginner...

Thanks

There are some excellent online courses right here at BP to help you get started. YOu just need to know what direction you want to go. Then eventually look into a professional school like Brooks, Hallmark, RIT, and so on. Those will provide you the tools required to compete in this really rough business.

Start by looking at other people's photographs. Find out what you like and what you don't like about them. Study them. A good resource is right here. Study contest winners. Then read the discussions on the photos and find out what other people think. Read every book in your library on photography. Purchase some books that cover subjects you feel most intimidated by. Practice all the time. Start using the manual modes on your camera and figuring out when, where, why and how to change and use your aperture and shutter speed along with ISO on digital or which film speed to use for which circumstance.

Once you've done all that consider taking a class to expand your horizons. Everything up to that point is free and available online and in your camera manual. I personally believe you'll get a lot more out of a class once you've learned your equipment and I think there are great classes here. I'm looking into a compositional class for later this year as a matter of fact.

Good luck!
