Photography Question

Camera Upgrade

I have a Canon Rebel now and want to upgrade. I thought I wanted the Canon 20D but another photographer told me that the Fuji is better with skin tone and that if I am going to be photographing people I should look into that. Any comments would be appreciated before I spend the money.

That's what I love about film. If I don't like the colors I am getting from my camera, I just change a roll of film, not the whole camera.

One thing I would keep in consideration is the amount of Canon equipment you now have that would work on the new camera vs what you would have to buy if you changed to another brand.

I'm sure that Kerry would agree that many photographers have certain film brands that they prefer for the way they render skin tones.

But I wouldn't put much faith in someone who says that one digital SLR is better with skin tones than another digital SLR. Maybe you could say that when comparing two P&S cameras, since more processing is done in camera. But with a digital SLR, you're expected to do some post processing. If you're not happy with the skin tone in a picture, fix it. Adjust the color balance, brightness, saturation, contrast, etc. until you're happy with it.

Don't give up your lenses, stick with Canon.

I have to agree with Chris, not only would you have to replace lenses but the Fuji S3 Pro is half as much again as the 20D, has 2.1mp less sensor and is out performed in Metering, iso noise control and general image quality by the canon. Its also worth baring in mind that second hand canon fit lenses are in abundance on E-Bay so sourcing that new lense at a good price is relativly easy. I found with the rebel that using a gray card to set your white balance gives great skin tones using studio flash and have not yet altered a skin tone in photoshop. As soon as money allows I will be purchasing the 20D.

Well, which Fuji? The S3PRO? I looked into that camera and it seems to be a great one. I did go with the 20D though.

I've been asked about how I get such good skin tones and that "natural" look in my portraits. I've gotten good results with both a point and shoot Fuji and the 20D and I think camera settings, lenses, and post processing can all effect the outcome. But I think lighting is the biggest key. Becoming a master of light, whether in natural or studio is the key to good skin tones in my experience--and any high quality camera should be capable of getting good tones. I'm by no means a "master" but I do know what works for me and my cameras.

And if I want different tones during a shoot I don't have to shoot up the rest of my roll of film before I can change things up--I just go to my parameter menu and switch my settings for a whole new look. :-)

I wouldn't let anything like "skin tones" scare you away from the 20D. Plenty of great portrait photographers use the 20D so it must get pretty darned great "skin tones". It's a great camera. I love it.

Thanks all. Wierd but my Rebel broke today. I'm sending it off for the month it will take to fix the problem. they are holding the 20d for me at Wolf Camera. Thank you for the advise all. I did not know that I would have to replace it so soon.

  Hi Michelle,
Great choice, I just moved from a Digital Rebel to the 20D and it is awesome! Fast FPS, 0.2 sec startup time, 9 AF points, built very well and the quality of photos at high ISO has to be seen to be believed, plus all your existing lenses will work with it (especially if they are Canon).
Enjoy,
Del

Have you looked at the new Digital Rebel XT? comes quite close to the 20d but is 500 dollars less and is smaller and lighter
