Photography Question

Nina M. Waters

Which photo paper to use.

Hello,

I am a beginner photographer currently taking a Black and White photography class. My teacher gave us our first pack of photo paper for free it is Arista VC RC PLUS, Glossy VC. I am having problems fining this exact paper anywhere, as well as problems finding any one working at a camera shop willing to help me. Can you pleas tell me which paper I can use as an alternative to this one.

Thank you in advance,
Nina

Ilford Multigrade IV is a great B&W paper, and the first choice for many pro printers, including myself. It is reasonably priced, and comes in a variety of surface finishes.

I used mostly Ilford papers when I took photo classes.

If you want to stick with the Arista brand, www.freestylephoto.biz carries it.

I agree with the Ilford Multigrade IV paper, that is what I used in my Black and White class. I would go with semi-matte or pearl finish, I think it looks more professional than glossy, but that is just a personal preference... I think glossy paper makes black and white prints look cheap, but a lot of people like it. If you liked the first pack you used, which was glossy, stick with the glossy finish.

Somebody who uses kodak will also say it's the first choice of pro printers. Kodak or Ilford are good enough. And probably the most popular, if not the only brands you'll see in a store. Either one you'll be happy with.

When I picked my first pack of papers, It was a relatively blind leap of faith. I too went with Ilford MultiGrade IV, with a pearl finish. I love the stuff, it's a wonderful paper to work with, and people (clients!) just swoon over how sharp it is. Start out with a pack of 25 5x7's, and see how it reacts to differnt negatives and Contrast Filters. And have an awesome time!
