What film speed and less grain for concert shootin

I will have my first concert shooting, I never done that before so I have really no clue what film to use!!
I will use my Nikon F100 and a Nikkor 24-85mm lens, I donĀ“t use my flash or tripot and I do want to capture the stage feeling!! I will be on stage and around it and I am asking myself what color film should I use? I never did use a fast film before and the last thing I like to have is alots of grain!!! The stage will be dark and only the spotlight will be there! What film should I use??

Greetings William: A large part of the grain problem you're looking to avoid depends a lot on how big a print you want to make. If your primary light source is going to be a single white spot chances are you can get by with a medium speed 200 or 400 ISO film. For that I'd recommend either Agfa Optima 400 or 800, or the Fujipress 400 or the 800 ISO.

It's better to shoot a higher ISO and pull it down to get a 1 stop overexposure which gives better color saturation and a slightly denser negative that will generate less grain at a higher enlargement size. So, if you go with the higher ISOs at 800, just set your meter for ISO 400, and have the film processed normally.

Also, I'd recommend taking a roll or two of black and white, say Fuji Neopan 1600 used with a #11 yellow filter to clean up the tungsten light and produce a cleaner white. Yes, it's a bit grainy though far less I think, than Ilford or T-Max 3200 and you'll probably get some interesting shots in b&w as well.

The 24-85 is a good zoom, but based on the vantage points you'll have, you might think about also having a 75-150 zoom to pull your subject in tighter. The more full-frame you can go, the less enlarging/cropping you'll have to do and the less grain you'll need to deal with. Get the picture?
Take it light ;>)

Recommend spot metering on the spot-lit performer. Matrix and centerweighted metering will read the very dark background and tend to overexpose.
