Help with backdrops... Hey all! I'm in the process of setting up a home studio and I'm shopping for backdrops. Has anyone tried Amvona.com? I about ready to buy 3 10'x20' dyed muslin backdrops and a portable stand. Also, can anyone provide advice as to what basic colors are the best for starting out? Your help is most appreciated! --

Mike, before you buy any backdrops log onto eBay and check out the "Photo Accessories" section. There are a lot of sellers for backdrops. Even if you don't feel good about bidding for what you want you can get web addresses for a lot of places that will sell to you direct. I think that it will be worth your time.

Mike , I think I can save you a lot of $$. go to a fabric store , you can get any color muslin , canvas , or even cotton. I have had no problem finding it in sizes L&W to do the job. dye it your self if you get white , tie-dye it , hang it on a cloths line and splater it with paint ? or give it to the kids to go nuts on with, the younger the kids the better! they creat very interesting murals.I have made most of my equipment , from reflectors to light stands.you would be very suprised at what you can make and save money , and still look very professional. example; I made an outstanding reflector disc useing a large 20" needle point ring . I stretched reflecting fabric over it , added a spring clamp . I can clamp it most anywere . it works as a very directional soft reflector. construction time = 1/2 hour . Need an easy to use background stand? get a long wooden pole no more then 2" diamiter, add an eye bolt in each end hang from the ceiling for studio. A portable stand can be made from tent poles found at any sporting goods store. they will be much cheaper , plenty strong , folding and they look so much like the real thing . I think I spent $20. saving money = more photographs.
