Rodeo Shooting Lens I have been shooting rodeos sparsely with limited lens's range and speed when used indoor. At this point I am trying to decide between two Canon lenses; The Canon 70-200mm f/4.OL USM w/teleconverter 1.4x or the CanonEF 300mm f/4.OL IS USM Autofocus w/without the 1.4x teleconvert? I will appreciate all opinions in helping me to made this decision.

I assume the current lens you with which are not satisfied is a typical f/4-5.6 zoom. While the EF 70-200 f/4L USM is much sharper and has other nice features, you'd still be at roughly the same maximum aperture - f/4 to 200mm, and f/5.6 to 280mm with a 1.4x TC. The EF 300 f/4L IS USM gives you one stop gain in maximum aperture/shutter speeds at 300mm, but at the expense of the versatility of the zoom. IS is a great feature for handholding such a long focal length, but does not contribute to freezing subject motion. I'd lean toward an f/2.8 zoom. You have a 2 stop gain in aperture/shutter speeds (1 stop with a 1.4x TC), and your autofocus will function better with the wider aperture. The EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM + EF1.4x would seem ideal, but is far more expensive than the EF 300 f/4L IS USM you're considering. More economical would be

I'll add to Jon's reply. I have the Sigma 2.8 EX 70-200 with the matched TC. I bought the lens on ebay for about $630 and the TC new for $169. The lens is sharp, fast and works quite well. It's also LARGE so flex those muscles! I love mine but only use it for limited situations--mainly low light. Karma

Thanks Karma, is the Sigma 2.8 EX 70-200 compatible with the Canon 20D? The matched TC, is it a Canon brand or Sigma? What comparable lens do you use when there is adequate(daylight) lighting situations?

William, I have the 20D so yes, the Sigma is compatible. I bought the suggested matched Sigma 1.4 TC. The 2.0 TC didn't get the good reviews that the 1.4 gets. My lens that I normally use in acceptable lighting situations is what I call my "all purpose" lens. It's a Tamron 28-300mm and I'm quite pleased with it in many situations. Low light isn't one of them! That lens is my "travel" lens. It's light, compact and gives me many good pictures. It isn't a professional quality lens though. So for any low light wildlife shots or certain portraits I'll use my Sigma EX which is a lens that was recommended to me by professional photographers and serious hobbyists on www.fredmiranda.com Karma

Thanks again Karma. I have been reading reviews of both lenses; the Canon EF 70-200 F/2.8L IS USM, EF 70-200 f/2.8L and Sigma 2.8 EX 70-200. The Canon Lenses are beyond my budget, so I will focus on the Sigma Lens. Do you know there I might view some action photographs taken with Sigma lens?

Here's a good site with lots of reviews and some sample images you can look at: http://www.photographyreview.com/PRD_83598_3128crx.phpx PB Base also has sample images, but I'm not sure of the addy on that page. If you google "sigma 70-200mm sample" you'll get lots of pages with sample shots! Good luck! Karma
