Plug ins for photoshop

Can someone explain how plug-ins for photoshop work? Is it a program that adds features to the photoshop program itself where you can use different stuff within photoshop or do you have to have a completely different program? Also, I have looked at the different plug-ins on the internet and now I am even MORE confused. Could someone make some sence out of this. Also, what plug-ins would you recomend or not recommend? I went to a local store and they did not seem to understand WHAT I was talking about. HELP PLEASE!!

You are correct in your assessment of a "plug-in." Once installed, they act as part of PS, and are opened within PS.
There are a gazillion of them available online, each serving a specific purpose or function. One does NOT buy a plug-in for the sake of buying a plug-in. You buy one because you need or want its specific functions.
No one can recommend what plug-ins you need or want. YOU must define your need, and then locate a plug-in that serves that purpose. If you cannot think of something that you want or need that PS either does not do, or does not do that well, then I would suspect that you really don't need any.

That was an interesting response as you are assuming that I do not know what they do.

To be more specific; I am looking in particular for more filters, type fonts and brushes. I would also like to add a slew of different textures to my base. If someone could help me locate a replicable plug in with no viruses attached I would apprieciate it. Like I said they do not seem to be carried by the stores around me so the resources I can go to are limited. I would like help in locating a reputable business with no viruses etc. I saw some free ones on the internet but again I would rather pay than deal with issues. Is there a particular plug in that people recommend by a certain maker/company that they stand behind that offers an easy display and numerous options.

I've downloaded lots of fonts and popular plug-ins and have never had a problem with viruses....

I am confused on this download part. I thought that it was like software that you could buy upload to your computer and it would be there. But it doesn't happen that way. If you buy a software program it has a way to load and then you have an icon to access it. This is the part where I am confused how do you get it to actually be IN photoshop? I am missing a very important piece to this puzzle, and the answer is probably REALLY STUPID, so I am almost embarrased to ask. But I have no one to ask but here? Once it is downloaded why doesn't it show up in photoshop? I originally thought that I needed a program to do this but as michael stated above there is not a program.

Most of the plug-ins I have downloaded have an installer that will extract the necessary files and copy them to the plug-ins folder under photoshop (or another location you specify).

If the plug-in doesn't come with an installer, then you just need to copy it to the plug-ins folder yourself.

Any plug-ins that are placed there should automatically be available in Photoshop. I haven't tried adding any brushes or textures, so they might go in a different folder.

If you do a Google search for "free photoshop plug-ins" you will find tons of junk and occasionally something useful. I've downloaded lots of plug-ins and other programs from www.download.com

Of course, the usual warning applies: NEVER, EVER download anything if you don't have an automatic virus scanner running in the background. If you go to download.com, type "plug-in" in the search box. I always take the time to read the descriptions and even the user reviews before I download something. This will usually tell you if the program contains any adware.

Of all the free or cheap plug-ins I've found, most were not even worth the time spent testing them. Apparently, there are dozens of developers out there who think I really need their help to distort my image beyond recognition, and turn it green and purple.

Good luck.

Chris!! I can't tell you how awesome you are! You are a wealth of information--its great getting to know you! :)

Might you share one more thing? How do you copy it to the plug ins folder?
Thanks so much!

Open "program files" on the hard drive, then open "adobe", then the file that's tiled whatever version you have, you'll see a folder that says "plug in".

That's the folder you save it to.

Thanks Melissa, that's a really nice thing to say.

I'm really enjoying BP, and I can't tell you how glad I am that I stumbled across this site. I promise you, I've gotten more advice here than I've given out. I only wish I had the time to try some of the great ideas I've gotten here.
