Photography Question

new to all this

Hi everyone.
I am new to slr having had a digital compact two years ago I have since bought a second hand olympus e10 and have really been bitten by the photography bug. My problem is I can only use the auto setting as im blown away by exposure, appeture etc. Can anyone reccomend a good book thats easy to understand for a digital slr novice. Also, I have bought a bower wide angled lense that im pleased with, I like to take scenery shots & also portrait shots of my beautifull daughters, do I need the tcon-14b olympus lense & what will this give me.
Thank you in advance for your response.
And, this looks like a great site I found it by luck

The best book I have read is
Understandg Exposure by Bryan Peterson.

The revised edition for film and digital.
You can order that from this site I think.
It is great for beginners. I still refer to it often.

I also like Perfect Exposure by Jim Zuckerman.

Also when I was total novice(not so long ago)I am novice now by the way, I would take a few shopts in auto and then play...play ..play...in manual. Find out what works for you.Look at the exposures you like and log them on a notebook for next time you go out. It helps you remember your own settings and it becomes second nature. So I am saying write your own book as you learn I think.

Hope that helps some
Cheers
Jo

  Hi Jo

Thank you for that, I will get the Brian Peterson book & also try a few things myself as you suggest. Although apperture, shutter speed & all the rest blow me away at the moment, im sure with time & practice & a little reading I will get to know.
I checked out your gallery, I wish I was that novice! excellent pictures, I like the one of the canadian geese. Funnily enough, I live a 5 minute drive from a beautfull resevoir, I went there at the weekend, complete with spare fully charged batteries & waited for over an hour for a shot just like that one. when they came over my head to land on the water, I had the sun setting in the background. What a great shot I thought, when I looked on the lcd all I got was very blurred sky. Too slow a shutter speed, so I guess im learning a little already, but what frustration to miss what would have been a great shot. It will come though, when it does i'll post on here so you can let me know what you think.
Thanks again very much for your time & advice.
Best regards
Paul
