Photographing Star Trails

I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on how to photograph star trail. I tried that other night and got some ok pictures but was wondering if there is some steps that I am missing. Thanks, Nathan

From what I've heard, you will need a shutter speed of at least a half hour. Make sure you're in a VERY dark place as well but you probably know that. Moonlight will probably blow out the exposure. Make sure you have a good tripod and a remote release or a timer. This may not matter since your scene will be dim anyways. Anyway, use a very long shutter speed like I said. That's depending on how long you want the trails to be. Experiment and maybe figure out if you want the trails to be twice as long, multiply the shutter speed by two so 1 hour instead of a half hour. Since you're working with digital, some pixles might get blown out or "hot," that's as much as I know. Use some kind of software program to adjust lighting like levels in photoshop. This can make the darks darker so the stars stand out more. I hope this clears up the steps that you might have missed.

Yahoo has a wonderful astrophoto forum and this is discussed a lot. Try digital101 on yahoo.
