Well Jody, I'm wondering how far outdoors you need to go and what kind of lights you're already using in your studio set-up. If you're shooting outdoors close to your house, just rig a 3 prong extension cord and use your existing lights.

If you're talking about going to a park, etc., deep deep deep on location, lol ! Then you may not need many lights at all. A simple electronic flash (the higher the guide number the better) and a couple of fill panels to push the available outdoor light around a bit. Someone to help hold the reflectors is always a nice touch.

Beyond that, what kind of lights to buy is a pretty subjective decision based largely on need, budget, expandability and versatility. Monolights with modifiers (I prefer a big 3x4' soft box) are great for portraiture, but I also use pack systems. Outdoors, I use either a Quantum T-2 with a separate Turbo Battery pack and/or a Vivitar 285 HV that works with the Turbo. The T-2 has a guide number of 160 at ISO 100. I think the 285HV is about 130.

Both can be mounted on the cameras (35mm or medium format) or used off-camera on light stands and triggered by radio slaves. And sure, you can use both these indoors in a studio setting, but at 200 Watt Seconds, the Quantum may not deliver the indoor-studio horsepower you need to get smaller working apertures, like f 11. Depends on your set-up and what kind of light modifiers you use, if any.

I'm a fairly strong advocate of renting to try before you buy. Try some different lighting that seems to suit your purpose and see what you think.
And there you have it. Mark
